What is your favorite all around combat rifle in the under $1000 category and what is your favorite over $1000?

Under $1000: Any AK variant

Over $1000: I never intend to spend that much on any one rifle.

Well, I bought my M96 for $995!

The really expensive stuff I haven't shot. I would enjoy trying the Sig AMT, Sig 540 or 550 and FAMAS. Oh, and the G11! ;)

Samuel, where did you find an FN CAL? I've never seen one aside from pictures of the S. American ones.

Under $1000...the Bulgarian SLR-95(actually under $500)
Over $1000...the Bulgarian...when I get finished 'tricking it out' with premium parts!
Never warmed up to the AR series(and I carried one for Uncle Sam for 4 years). Though I'll admit its versatility in terms of parts and uppers in different calibers are quite interesting.
I am concerned with the reliability of a rifle first. And the 'danger zone' of the first 100 meters. Anything after that is gravy.

I'll take combat rifle to mean something in full-power, not an intermediate-level cartridge, so that rules out rifles in .223, 7.62x39, and 5.45x39. With that in mind:

Over 1K: FAL from DSA, or Springfield M1A rifle

Under 1K: M1 Garand, Robinson Armament/MOLOT VEPR or Super-VEPR in .308, or Romak III in 7.62x54R

Under $500: I guess a CETME (for about $400, the CETMEs aren't too shabby)

For an intermediate-level cartridge, the choices become more and therefore tougher. AKs high on list there though.

under 1k: Mosin nagant, hey they were combat rifles just as much as the m-14 was. :D

Over 1k: I would much rather buy an M1 garand and an M1 carbine and a K98 mauser before I spend that much on a single weapon

I would haft to say G36 variations and along with G3A3. But the Ak and M16 are pretty good to. But I haft to say an old fashon M14 made in the USA.

Nice rifle, varoadking ;) !!!
Soon I'll get a M1 too :) .

under 1000 US$ why not an AKM or AKMS produced in Izhmash (http://www.izhmash.ru/eng/product/weapon.shtml) ?

over 1000 US$ the SIG 550 is an accurate and robust combat rifle.

U: frist place AK, second place Ruger Mini-30
O: first place FAL, second place 6.8mm AR w/ piston

Honorary mentions: first place SAF (SG-550 based) subgun, second place MD2A1 (FAL based) subgun - I have no idea how much these go for and chances are I'll never see either one in my life if things continue as they are.

I don't really understand this logic since a great many nations main battle rifles are chambered in these calibers.
Back the point, I'd take an M-16 any day.

I carried an Uncle Sam M1 and an Uncle Sam M14 and owned my own personal M3 and AR15.

If it is my body on the line, . . . one battle rifle, . . . price will not be a factor, . . . it will be the M14 (or M1A) hands down, no doubt, no questions asked.

For reliability, . . . there is no comparison.

It's range is twice any rifle chambered for 5.56 and half to 2/3 again for any chambered in the communist 7.62.

Body armour will easily defeat the 5.56 and commy 7.62, . . . but has a much harder time with the M14 round.

May God bless,
Dwight

AR. Just fun to play with. I'll take a M-14 or FN-FAL if it's for real.

BTTT! Good discussion fella's, I would love to hear more opinions on this. How does the CETME rank? I have heard mixed reviews since it is more or less a parts gun.
