By popular demand, we've put together what we're currently calling the S.W.A.T. Sampler. A downloadable collection of features and columns from the most recent issue. Kinda like a free Teaser, if you will.
Here's what we need:
- Honest feedback
- A Permanent Name for the product.
Winner gets a free 1 year subscription.
The July 2002 "Sampler" is available at http://www.swatmagazine.com/shop/cgi-bin/cp-app.cgi?&pg=cat&ref=cat_03

Rich-
Thanks for offering the sampler issue.
Ok, honest feedback...
The content is excellent, no complaints at all.
Depending on how many resources you want to use on the sample each month, you might want to consider dumping the .PDF format and going with a more web-friendly format similar to the news articles on the websites for places like FOX News, MSNBC, etc.
For an example, look at the layout of the article here:
FOX News article (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,60759,00.html) (Nevermind the content.)
This will result in a layout that doesn't look like the magazine page, but will be easier to read onscreen.
You might also consider making the table of contents clickable, so if I want to skip right to the article on WWI pistols, all I need to do is click on it.
I think that acrobat files are great for stuff that you download and print out, but it's hard to read onscreen.
.PDF's can also take awhile to download, especially if the file is just exported directly from the magazine layout program.
Of course, doing this is going to be more effort than just exporting a PDF, and I don't know if you have someone at the SWAT office who would be willing to act as the monthly SWAT sampler print-to-web translator.
Besides, you may not want to invest the time/resources/money into something that doesn't directly make money.
You could, however, offset some of those costs by offering advertising to companies who want to appear in the online edition. The advantage for them would be that you could include a link that goes directly from the advertisement to their website.
As for ideas for the title, how about some of these:
eSWAT
iSWAT
dSWAT
SW@T
or, something like this:
sw@t (the lowercase italics hopefully hinting at the abbreviated nature of the content.)
Ok, that's all I can think of right now. :)

Caliban-
Thanks for the time and input.
What you're referencing on Fox is simple HTML. The conversion from PDF to HTML is, as you note time consuming. Additionally, the Sampler needs to be an accurate representation of what the full (paid) download looks like. So, if we converted one, we'd really have to convert the other. That would, indeed, be a lot of work.
As to the links from the Index, I agree. Expect it next issue....also we'll try to get all www addresses to become live" links. I'm not real big on hitting our advertisers up for money...I'd prefer to offer this as a perk.
Thanks much.

I dunno guys. This could be an evil plot. I mean, do any of us know Rich personally? He could be trying to get us hooked on his mag. Sure it's great for the first year, but then the withdrawal begins to set it. A month or two later, we'll be haggard and disheveled, seeking a fix in newstands outside of our neighborhoods so no one will see us for what we are. Guns&Ammo will only be a temporary (5 minute) fix. We'll have to renew our subscriptions year after year just so we don't have to face the horrid, awful truth. Rich Lucibella has turned us all into S.W.A.T. junkies...
I guess if you gotta have a vice...:D

The reason I subscribed was the "Great News Stand Hunt". No matter how early I got there, the S.W.A.T.'s were always GONE! I HAD to send in the little subscription card before somebody dropped a net over me! You see a 52 year old man smashing his cane (bad hip) into a news stand and yelling ~DAMMIT, DAMMIT, DAMMIT and, for some reason, people think you're crazy or violent or something.:D

KR...
After finding S.W.A.T. bought out once, and having a seisure in front of the periodicals rack, the nice old dude (a shooter) behind the counter saves me a copy... (he reads it first! :D )
so I ALWAYS get one...
This am, When I told him I was gettin' a subscription, he smiled andd told me it was a good thing... 'cause SOMETIMES he forgot to save 2 copies, and didn't get to take one home!
(Since it'll be 6 to 8 weeks for the first one in the mail, he's gonna still save me the next issue!)
