How well does a 20 Ga work for defense? Do you need to load it with 3" mags or will 2 3/4" do just as well. I am using #6 shot at the present time. Do you think I need to go bigger?

The 20 will do fine. Check the Archives, there's oodles of stuff on HD shotguns....

More than adequate.
I might step up to #4 buck if you have noone living on the other side of the wall you intend to splatter the perp all over.
I've relayed this twice but I'll reiterate:
While working at the local gun & knife club (i.e. trauma center)
I witnessed the remnants of several thugs who broke into the wrong house. The only one of the perps that lived is eating through a tube and crapping in a bag.
All thanks to a 20 guage and some small game shot at very close range.:D

Where does one find any 20ga barrel less than 24"? All the 20gas I saw were all bird guns and had 24-28" bbls.
