Why don't more manufacturers have detachable magazines? It seems the main downside of the shotgun would be the long reload times.

If you are talkin bout pumps n autoloaders with tube mags, I imagine the demand is so low as to make the cost unacceptably high.

They load pretty fast anyway, plus tactical reloading while shooting. Then there is the matter of where you gonna carry the long tubes.

There are shotguns with detachable box magazines.

Stinger, you forgot the evil barrel shroud.

I am miserably slow with reloading a shotgun. Is there anything wrong with box magazines?

No magazine fed shotguns are legal in CA. I may take a look at the Knoxx conversion for the 870.

Magazine fed pump action shotguns are legal in California.

I just bought a Valtro here.

So much for more internet lawyers.

I always figured that the two major pluses of detachable mags were to carry a large ammount of ammo in the mag and keep the tip of the cartridges or the primers of the next one if front of them, so you can use point ammo. But neither really applies to shotguns because there are spitzer shotshells and the shotshells are so large and bulky it becomes unpractical to carry more than you can fit into a tube mag. Plus the extra cost and parts to lose wouldn't make them good sellers to a general market anyway.

OTOH, if you have the money Knoxx industries, www.knoxx.com , makes a detachable mag for the Moss 500 and Rem 870.

Sincerely,
Adam

Saiga, the Russian manufacturer, makes a derivative of the AK47 in 12 ga. It is magazine fed, semi-auto. Looks cool too.!!

I recently obtained my late Uncle's shotgun.....Kinda crappy, but it is the first magazine fed shotgun I have ever seen.

It is a Sears model Bolt action, magazine fed .410. Wierd little shotgun, but kinda neat. I haven't shot it yet, but will soon.:)

Semi-autos are out of the question because they are "Assault Weapons" in CA.

I wonder if a Knoxx conversion can be done on a Benelli Nova.
