If you were living in a house by yourself or with a family of your own, which would you prefer for a self defense weapon, a fully automatic rifle or a 8 rd auto shotgun? Which would you grab for in a rush? Just curious.

Fully automatic???

I'll take the shotgun rather than go through the hassles involved with Class III weapons.

You should know what the answer is going to be when you post the question in a shotgun forum.

That said, I'd grab the 12 gauge unless the MG was an MG-42 or M-60 and I had a big clear fire zone.

I'd take my 20-gauge pump over anything else. If you've got an MP-5 with several 30-round magazines, maybe we can talk. But until then, I'll stick with my $156 gun shop sale special. And a S&W 686.

for home defense i'll take the shotgun.

if i'm in a warzone, defending a base, airfield, etc., i'd go with the machine gun.

Depends on location, location, location. If it's a standard 'hood with neighbors and so on, an 870.

If it's rural and the house is quite remote, MAYBE an M1A.....

Definitely the shotgun as whatever is used will be confiscated as evidence. I'd much rather have my relatively inexpensive shotgun taken than an almost irreplaceable Title II firearm.

Speaking of "confiscation as evidence"...

Juries have been known to be much more amenable and understanding to shotguns for home defense vs. full auto weapons.

Has a case of a homeowner defending himself with a full auto ever gone before a jury ?

I would chose the 12 gauge shotgun for HD distances less likely to hurt any friendlies living next door plus shotguns have a way of solving things without firing often and if not I can't thinkof too many situations of the HD type that 8 rounds of 00 wouldn't solve!
