Mossberg 183D

A friend is selling a Mossberg 183D, bolt action, in .410.
Anybody have any info?
I'm asking over at Harley Nolden's, too.
Nothing has come up in an archive search.

Most modern bolt action shotguns are pretty reliable and durable.Fast second shots are problemetical.Good squirrel gun.

Nice toy, but I'm lukewarm about 410s anyway.

Maybe, Lionheart. I'm rahter hesitant to recommend a 410 because people keep trying to shoot living critters with them, and leave a lot of suffering in their wake.

There's one "Expert" on the outdoor shows that uses a 410 frequently for various birds. I wish I had a nickle for every one I think he's lost. Editing covers a multitude of sins.

But, for learning the basics and getting his feet wet, a 410 used UNDER CLOSE SUPERVISION is OK.

Supervision is a given.

My son is actually getting a Daisy BB gun for Christmas; my idea in buying the .410 is:
1. It's for sale

2. I know its provenance;
3. It'll get him used to hearing something go "bang."

Sure,LH, go ahead and get it if you want to.

Firing a 410 at a clay bank with a few clays setting on it is a good way to start anyone. Old cans work too. this gives the kid some success right at the start, and kids need victories.

I picked up the .410 and it turns out to be a 183K-A, not a 183D, which means it has an adjustable choke. Never saw anything like it.

It came with a leather case -- and the original manual and some advertising material in brown envelope. Neat!

According to the manual, it will take for 2-1/2 and 3 inch shells, which seemed odd to me for some reason. I guess cuz it didn't say anything about 2-3/4.

The Monte Carlo stock, which my friend remembered being sawed off had been reattached somewhere along the line. The mend is visible of course, but whoever did it did a pretty fair job. A slide on butt pad should cover it up nicely.

Should clean up real nice. It's another neat old gun to go with the Lefever I picked up a couple of days earlier.

Hmmm, now, I'm wondering if I should saw off the stock again for my son.

Think I'll let him try it first.

Lionheart, I've never seen a 2 3/4" 410 hull. All I've seen have been 2 1/2 and 3".

Sounds like a nice little piece, hope Son and you enjoy....
