Show us your....

I always enjoy looking through the "Show us your...." threads and after reading the thread about hunting partners vs. hunting solo it got me thinking about my favourite hunting partner.....my six year old Lab cross "Buddy." He was only intended to be a companion as I went off to the isolation of the far north to start a career; he was never meant to be a hunting dog and so has never had any training as such, but he seems to have enough natural instinct to do reasonably well. Treeing squirrels is his specialty (of course) but he flushes grouse and has put the run on more than one bear when I've been out beating the bushes. And just this weekend he retrieved (again, with no training) both of ours first duck from a pond.

Anyone else love getting out into the bush with their canine partner? Show us your four-legged hunting companions!

Here they are at their finest, two high-energy Brittanys, ready and primed after a full day of hunting.

OK OK he's not a hunting dog. But he did kill a lizard once.

Here is my old hunting partner, Sugar, and she will be 14 in a couple of weeks. She is still very spry but is stone deaf.

This is my new partner, Annie. I never thought I would get attached to another dog like I am to Sugar, but Annie has become really special to me in a short amount of time.

I got my dog "free" as he was fighting with the other black lab that he lived with. The previous owner works for the NYS DEC and is a VERY avid hunter. He supposedly trained my dog (and the other lab) to hunt ducks and such, but our dog, Willy, isn't much for retrieving, which is partially why we got him and not the other one.

He's not much of a hunter (doesn't like to listen), but he's a sweetheart, and LOVES being in the woods.
