12 ga. flares

Saw a "12 gauge flare gun" and some 12 guage flares. Was wondering if those flares can be fired from my shotgun? They may come in handy for emergencies if i'm off in the woods and get injured or something..

Some flares are designed to be "launched" from a shot gun but most are low power for only 3 inch plastic guns "OLIN ORANGE" and will nearly always squib in the longer barrels... No over bore and tighter choke is a real set back. Older brass flares and any made for shot gun launch may be okay but no one will be able to assure this but the maker...

You can buy standalone disposable flare/launchers like the Orion Skyblazer's but I don't know what the forestry people would think about it an orange smoke bomb in a cleared area might be better.

I have fired the 12 guage Orion flares from my marine 870 12 guage with no issues except there is alot more fouling from the flare, no big deal.

Indy.

The only safe place to launch marine rated flares is over water or possibly 100% arid sand devoid of any foliage... Phosphorous is not easily extinguished!
