Best All Around Round?
ok, im going into the Coast Guard in a few months and Im going for a station somewhere in either the North East or North West(Somewhere with bigger game than Florida). I currently have a Remington 710 30-06(imho a bit overkill for the little dear here in florida, but ive never had a hog wlk away from it) and im looking into a new rifle purchase before i get shipped. im thinking either a 7mm or a 25-06, would either of these be suffucient for where i wanna go or should i just stick with 30-06? not positive on what ill be hunting in either place, but im looking for something that wouldnt be too much overkill in general(and accuracy realy isnt an issue, i can get 1.5in groups at 300 yards)
any info or advice is greatly appreciated Thanks Randy

if you dont know what you will be hunting how do you know what you need to buy another rifle?
30-06 kills most everything humanely with few exceptions. I'd suggest waiting until you get there and go from there if you want something different from your rifle. many times the best way to find out what you want is to bring some type of gun thats capable of killing the game you are after. after a few hunts you'll know you want a sling, less recoil, lighter gun, flatter shooting long range power ect ect and go from there. |

I'd stick with the 30-06. You can get light loads to heavy loads for just about anything you'd be hunting in North America.

If you get stationed up here in the NW then I'd just stick with the 30-06 you already have since you seem to be comfortable with it and it's perfectly adequate for deer and elk.

-06. If you come to the NW, you will want to have the extra money for fishing rods...

YUP! what they said! .30-06... a .30-30n is to light to be an all around round and a .45-70 (my choice fer "too dern big" game) but you get a heck of a knock down with a real good hot speed from the -06... i bet alot of our sand box soldiers wish they were poppin' off -06 rounds not them nato wimpy things they are stuck with!

Hogdogs - maybe, but I know I wouldn't have wanted to carry the extra weight of a full combat load of -06 for the extra power. 210 rounds of rifle ammo along with everything else.
As much weight as those guys carry now, every extra pound is a b*tch. Sorry - no intent to highjack the thread.

also not wanting to hijack... if'n i was an ORDERED soldier with "forward" work to do i would love to choose the option of 250 nato rounds or 125 .30-06 I would gleefully romp the dunes with the .06 as i have superior knock down ability! I mean 500+ yard shots with infantry issue gear! army of one don't mean as much as "EVERY SOLDIER A SNIPER...!"

Michigan deer hunter time... Gramps had a model 94 winny in .30-30 and granny had a springfield (i think) in .30-06... when the 2 of them went out hunting she had her 'sporterized... ie: cool lookin' wood... -06 and gramps had a fully accesorized winchester.. they both did good but her drinkin' was to hang with hubby so he was always a good bit more soused than her so she may have had more kills per day in the woods! When it came to us kids (grand kids) he took granny's rifle and we got the lever gun... in a weird way we knew it was better him than us accidently sending a lethal projectile a couple miles away...
WAY before laser sights i asked granny what gun was her first choice out of the unlockable gun case... 16,12 or what gauge... She said 10 inches or 100 yards on out to way more she wanted her "deer rifle" and son... I hate to imagine the target on the booming end... She was a crack shot! She could hurl a bullet on out yonder as easy as lay a grub 12.5 feet from the boat right in THAT HOLE and drag a bass or "DEEP WATER ROACH" (BIGAZZ BLUE GILL WITH A PURPLE BELLY) never caught a roach in less than 30-50 feet deep COLD water on the lake... Some states in the NE you can't deer hunt with a rifle, you have to use a shotgun with slugs. Wait until you know where you are going, If you go to the NW, stay with the '06, as much as I dislike the 710 if you're comfortable with it it will drop whatever you point it at.

i guess i will stay with my 06, and as far as states that dont allow rifles, ive also got a remington 535 with a slug barrel and a shot barrel, so that would be fine too(it kicks like a damn clysdale tho) lol

The .30-06 will work great here in the NW.
We have some long shots on the East/dry side that a .30-06 works great on. On the West/wet side things tend to be a bit closer, a .30-06 is a bit more than you need unless you get a chance at Roosevelt elk near the Olympics. Not in the Olympics mind you that's a no no. |

The '06 would in no way be my first choice for the Really Big Bears. I would not replace it with any other cartridge for any other game animal in North America, considering "need" or "adequate power".
I'm biased, of course, after 58 years with the old ought-six. Art |

Gadgetguy - in no way did I mean to take away an excuse to go buy another rifle!!!
That is one great thing about Uncle Sam moving you around the country - everywhere you go is a great reason to buy another gun!!

Wait until you get where you are going...
30-06 is the all around gun, kill anything in the lower 48 no problem. If you head NW, I would say go bigger and look at a 45-70 Gov't. The 45-7 has long since been the Western Plains and Alaska area rifle. Good for anything from coyotes to the bear when loaded right, just puts a big hole in critters. If you were to head NE, look at the 25-06, 257 Roberts, 270 area. All great rifles for that neck of the woods. All will kill the smaller black bear, whitetail, etc. F-C

"...going into the Coast Guard..." Get through Basic Training before you worry about anything else. Needs of the Service outweigh anything you want. You could end up back in Florida. However, the .30-06 will kill any game in North America, big bears included with a change of bullet.

Most Alaska bushkins use .30-06s or smaller. Magnums get more popular the closer you get to the gravitational pull of Los Anchorage orbit.

Enjoy the Coast Guard, Thanks. The 30-06 is fine, I use a 308.
1.5" groups at 300 yrds from a 710? Maybe you could show me your methods? |

My best friend was stationed at Coos Bay, OR for 3 years in late 1980's. He hunted elk and blacktail deer with his Stevens bolt action 30-30. None got away. He is now retired and working in Tigard. He still hunts with the older 30-30. Good hunting to you! Jack
