Half Cock?

I just aquired a Mossberg 500 and noticed that the hammer has a half cock notch and was wondering what its purpose is, or is it just something that just got added on for no reason.

Like most other designs with a half-cock, it's so that if the full-cock position gets worn to the point where the gun won't stay cocked anymore, the half-cock will catch the hammer instead of allowing it to fire the chambered round.

Geeze, I thought it was just a pre-phaser, STUN setting.
