Cowboy Rain Shooter?

I was just thinkin about this. Them IDPA folks shoot in all types of weather. Nothing seems to stop them. But it is just one pistol, probably four magazines, and not much else. For me the thoughts of ruining my cowboy hat and getting my guns all wet makes me just sick. Last time I shot two stages in a light drizzle, I threw my raincoat, over my gun cart to protect my firearms. I know it probably did not help that much, as they had to be withdrawn to be shot. But I did feel better. None of us quit shooting as it was more a challenge to keep on like nothing happened. Put the timer in a plastic bag and your fine. What is your personal rain policy ?

Howdy Ned,

If it looks like rain, I'll throw my slicker in the car and carry it around with me at the shoot. I'll take my Resistol hat and wear it when it looks like rain,since it's the least expensive hat I own,and it can be reshaped easily.

For my guns,I carry a trashbag around in my guncart that can just be slipped over the cart when it starts to rain. My good pard Angel Diamond makes gun sleeves out of canvas that are designed to allow guns to have their actions open,but still protect the gun from dirt and water. They are Scotch-guarded,so they would do a good job of keeping water off.

Fortunately,the clubs I shoot with either have covered areas on each bay or tents they put up,so you can park your guns out of the weather. I went to shoot in S.C. earlier this year,and it rained torentially. We only shot two of the six stages they had planned,and my guns were filled with water. fortunately,that's the worst I've seen it. As a matter of fact,I can't remember the last time it rained on a shoot day.

How-do Ned... cool, another CAS wire!!! Hey pard, ya shoulda been with us at the Wisconsin CAS State Championship in August of '98. Saturday, it poured solid from 9:00 - 3:00 which was exactly how long we shot. So much rain we had waterfalls from our hats to our sights. I usually wear my black duster (scotchguarded) and a good 7x beaver (or better) hat. Plus I have a huge golf umbrella that straps to the side of my guncart to keep equipment dry and provide a dry place to set every now and again. I don't mind the rain at all!!!

Howdy Ned, I know what yer talkin about. I live in Southeast Alaska and about the only time we see the sun is watchin the weather report fer Arizona or Texas. It's a real battle but ya just have ta keep smilin and shootin.

I usually shoot through the weather unless it gets drastic.

afternoon, gents. keep shootin' lessin' thars a twister! clean up was six hours one time, but loved every minute of it! btw, no missed targets, and rained like a cow wettin' on a flat rock. sundog
