Remington bolt cleaning

This is my first posting, been a long time reader and have learned a lot from this forum. I have a new Remington 700 LTR and removed and disassembled the bolt for cleaning and noticed a lot of grease inside...is it cosmoline? Should I clean it and spray it wityh a dry lube? Just wondering...Thanks

Eh, just clean it and lube it. Grease may be better (more enduring perhaps, considering how frequently most people disassemble their bolts), but dry lube works. You won't hurt anything.

FWIW, my dad once got a NIB M-48 Mauser. Cleaned it up and went to dry fire it. Cliiiiiiiiiiiicccckkk rather than a sharp Click! The bolt and striker were packed with cosmoline. Cleaned up, a little oil and presto!

Thanks P990...I will clean it to avoid and firing pin mishaps...

Beware of oil or grease inside your bolt. The firing pin is in a narrow tapered channel and oil or grease can act as a cushion that can keep your rifle from going BOOM. Cold weather can really gum up these lubes. I never put anything my Remington bolts except gun scrubber and compressed air.

Thanks riddleofsteel...I will likely clean it and lube it with some rem-oil or a dry lube if I ever venture out in the really cold weather...doesn't usually get all that cold here though.
