stock refinish

I have a rifle that needs to be reblued and while I'm having that done I'd like to refinish the stock myself. It's an oil finish and has 22 lpi checkering which does not need to be recut. The stock really is not too bad just some fairly light surface scratches. So should I use a stripper on this and if so how do I refinish the checkering. Would using a toothbrush with some stripper on the checkering remove the old finish? Thanks
