Another Magazine Question, for Xd.

I have seen in several places that the 17 rd high cap mags for the 9mm xd are the same as the 12 rd .40 cal mags. Can the same magazines be used, for example I have a .40 but If i get a 9mm can I use that mag in the 9mm as well? The main reason I ask is because there is a new 32 rd mag for the 9mm xd, could this magazine be used in my .40 sacrificing a few rds of course. It just seems really forign to me the concept of using the same magazine in more than one weapon. Thanks again for any help.
