Wait until you get where you are going...

30-06 is the all around gun, kill anything in the lower 48 no problem. If you head NW, I would say go bigger and look at a 45-70 Gov't. The 45-7 has long since been the Western Plains and Alaska area rifle. Good for anything from coyotes to the bear when loaded right, just puts a big hole in critters.

If you were to head NE, look at the 25-06, 257 Roberts, 270 area. All great rifles for that neck of the woods. All will kill the smaller black bear, whitetail, etc.
