Assuming they are being launched from carbine length semi-automatic rifles, and magazine vs clips does not play a factor, which would you rather have? Assume that you may have to use this one rifle for just about any scenerio. You may be able to sit at home with an ammo can next to you or you may have to travel and be limited to the ammo you can carry. Which would you choose in times of survival/military invasion?

other than a BAR i have not heard of many 30/06 semiautos

i gather you mean .308
which defeats more cover than 5.56
but is 1/3 larger & heavier to hump
and doesn't usually come in 30 round mags

survival warrents stealth
military invasion warrents crew served weapons

Actually, I was thinking along the lines of an M1 Garand, but whatever platform you would choose for the cartridge can be used for the purposes of this poll.

30-06.

I don't want to be close to the action, and I might need a bearskin coat to survive the winter while I'm hiding in the woods.:D

Implicit is the notion that I'm by myself with whichever of these I choose, so serious firefights are out of the question.

A Garand is plenty good, thank you, if I just gotta have a semi-auto. The '06 gives Ma Bell a Ring of Authority out at my idea of close combat: 500 yards.

Neither of them is worth a hoot in a live-off-the-land survival situation, of course: Too bloomin' loud!

I'd rather have the "reach out and touch someone" factor that the '06 provides over the .223, however if I'm in close quarters the .223 would be ideal. A FAL or AR-10 in .308 would be the best all around IMO.

I would go with the .223, I can carry a "h" of a lot of ammo and can do some pretty good hurting at 300+ yds.
