Interested in your opinion of the 1991 A1. Am I correct in beleiving that it is basically the same as the 1911 except that the 1991 has closer tolerences? How are they for accuracy?

The 1911 is a design. If you're thinking that it's basically the same as the mil-spec 1911A1, the 1991 is very close.

It's a bit tigher than the mil-spec 1911's. The same style tiny sights, bite me hammer, 1991 has a plastic trigger and flat, plastic mainspring housing. The original 1911A1 also has a lanyard loop on the mainspring housing.

Accuracy is generally 2-3" but a lot can shoot even better groups (some are a lot worse!). You can improve the 1991's accuracy by getting it re-crowned.

The 1991 is not a bad 1911 for the money but you can get more for the buck with a Springfield Loaded. If you want the Colt name, go for a true US GI 1911 or one of the new XSE.

Colt will also be introducing a duplicate of the mil-spec 1911A1 shortly.

If you really want to save a couple of bucks but want a mil-spec 1911, get an Argentine Colt.

The 1991 has a firing pin safety introduced in series 80 1911s.

I was a little leary of the 91A1 at first cause a few people posted unflattery remarks about it, but now after owning one for a few months I am very happy with it, never had a FTF for any reason, did have the trigger pull lightened a tad, & now feels & shoots very sweet. just my experience.

The base gun I used for my Custom 45 is the 1991A1.
It looks like a run of the mil 1911. Its not pretty.

Mine was the stainless model and I had it polished up on the sides and now looks very much better (did that myself) and beadblasted the rough matte finish.

It shoots 2"-3" at 25 yards which isnt bad for a carry gun.

Besides crowning, replacing the loose fitting bushing with a tighter hand fit one will greatly increase accuracy.

It is a good pistol and has never jammed and I've fired over 2500 rnds, including CCI Lawman (flying ashtrays) thru it, and I havent had any internal work besides a trigger job and a new trigger assembly (STI parts are very nice)

If you are buying it for a custom base gun then I would buy an out of the box gun such as Kimber or Sprinfeild armory since alot of the work besides accuracy improvements will be done allready, and thus you will save much money.

Too bad springfield and Kimber didnt introduce there semi-custom 1911A1s till after a year of buying my pistol. I could have saved probably $500.00 easily since most of the features I had put on my colt are standard on them.

But Im a colt fan so on the plus side mine says Colt on the frame and slide :)
