Steel, paper, game or other target, what's the distance of the longest shot you've made, what weapon and how many shots to get there?

* Shoulder fireable rifles only, any target larger than a Volvo doesn't count, and aircraft based ballistics / projectiles / missiles or energy weapons don't count.

I've spent some time shooting at ranges from 400-600 shooting prone or using shooting sticks to replicate hunting conditions with my 30-06 and 308 rifles. Using shooting sticks and from a sitting position I was able to keep 1 MOA out to 500 yards. At 600 about 10" was the best that I could do.

My local range where I have access to benches only goes to 300 yards, but for the last 2+ years I've been shooting at clay targets placed on the ground on a dirt bank a little beyond the 200 yard line with a 22. Ranges vary between 200 to about 230 yards. That is a challenge.

Okay, I'll play.

Longest shot at paper target. 600 yards. Put 5 shots into a 8 inch group. Remington Custom Shop M700 chambered in 7mmSTW.

Longest shot "medium sized" game. 430 yards. Prong Horn Antelope. Same rifle as above. One shot.

Longest shot varmint. 510 yards. (Made the 500 yard club.) Prairie Dog. NEF Handi Rifle heavy barrel, chambered in .223. Took a second shot, but got it.

On game: 600-650 yards. Called the left eye on a doe antelope. .270 Win Winchester M70 Featherweight (borrowed), w/ 2-7x Leupold. Unknown handload w/ 130 gr SP (rifle owner's load - he told me where it hit at 100 yd, and that was it). One shot. Left eye.
I wouldn't do it again. Too dumb. Too risky. Too many variables. Good learning experience.

On targets:
I've had hits at longer ranges, but a recent, memorable instance is fresher in my brain:
~1,000 yards. .30-06, 6x45mm, and a couple others. We thought it was a small plate (~6-8") at 625 yards, because that's what the range owner told us. No, it was a very small (4") plate at just shy of 1,000 yards. It took me the better part of a 20-round magazine to walk the 6x45mm in with varmint bullets; and four rounds before the '06 connected. Things just didn't add up. Couldn't figure it out. Then we got home, took a look at satellite imagery, and found that the yardage was dramatically different than advertised.

Even on well-developed, well-maintained ranges controlled by a single owner, you can't believe anything you're told...

It was very cool watching my brother smack that tiny plate repeatedly with his .300 WM, though. Of 20 rounds fired, I believe 15-16 were hits.

Are we talking first shot hit or walk it onto the target?

Longest first round hit: 500 meters , 257 Wby, centered the chest of a standing coyote, DRT.
Second longest first round hit: 460 yards, 243 Win, center punched sitting coyote, wasn't DRT but he didn't move far.
Several first round hits on coyotes @ 1/4 mile with my old 22/250. Shooting 1/4 mile is a common range in farm country that's fenced every 1/4 mile.

I don't consider walking the hits onto the target as much of a feat.

Longest target shot: 725yds, on a 12x24in (I think) steel.
Longest first round hit: 500yds, same kind of target.

Both with an AR-10 and Savage 11 Hog Hunter.

I need to try 1K plus sometime, but 725 is the farthest my local range goes to.

The longest kill I ever made on a game animal was just a bit over 900 yards with a custom Mauser in 270 Winchester. 150 grain Nosler Partition, one shot, and the kill was still fast. Shot the deer in it's bed. It was able to stand and take one step, then fell over.

The nest longest shot I ever made on a game animal was my 1st moose. I killed it with a 375H&H at right at 1/2 mile when I was on leave from the USMC. The shot was measured from a using a 7-1/2 Minute Series USGS Topo Map with calipers. I fired from the ridge I was on to the edge of the pond the moose was sanding next to, so I had some things to use as points to measure before the shot. I used 67.5 Gr 4064 and a Sierra 300 grain boat tail.

The longest shots I have made were with friends out about 15 miles from my home in the sage flats. We set 12" steel target out. Shooting from 1200 yards I was able to hit 4 in a row. Same rifles as the long shot on the deer I listed 1st.

Most impressive shot I have seen was made by my wife in Nevada back about 30 years ago. 675 yards. 22-250 bench-rest rifle with 53 gr match bullet and 4064 powder. The target was about 3/4 of marmots head looking over a rock. She fired over a back-pack up the hill to the target and made a miss first, just slightly high, that I saw from a 60 power spotting scope. I told her "what every you just did, do it exactly the same but come down 3 inches"! She did,and hit the marmot taking about 1/2 of the head off.

Thompson Center .50 Hawken Kit rifle. Handcast over fire .498 round ball the night before the trail walk. 120 grains of 2F Goex. Silhouette was a red 55 gallon steel drum lid hung in a tree. Target was on the far edge of a pond from a trail on the other side of the pond down to the target. Estimated range that day was 400+ yards. Since measured at 600 yards. Long way away for open iron buckhorn on the edge of a pond. Shot from classic Creedmore position.on back. All Kentucky Windage. Luckiest shot of my life. Shot on trail walk, one of 20 positions. I was the only one of the group to hit it. It was my first shot at the gong and first time seeing it. I actually shot 17 of 20 that day. Been back many times, and have not hit it since on first shot, but have hit it while spending time on it with many shots.

1000m in Afghanistan, prone using an M110 (suppressed 7.62). It was a bush/cactus type thing. Two shots, as it was pretty windy and my spotter was off by half a mil in judging the wind.

For my own weapons, standard size scuba tank at 625 yards. Semi-custom 260 Rem with match barrel using off-the-shelf Remington Core-Lokt PSP 140 grain ammo and a really old 3-9x scope. Took 4-5 shots (can't remember) because the scope adjustments weren't as advertised (vertical POI adjustments weren't consistent) and it was really windy. Once I was on it, I hit it 4 out of 6 times. The ammo wasn't super accurate in that rifle and I had no experience judging wind at that distance. Hitting 440 yards with the same set up was 100%, but that extra 200 yards really made it harder. Had to move away from the range before I got a decent scope and some good ammo unfortunately.

Longest on game was an antelope at 330 yards with 30-06. Shot was "prone unsupported" for any Army-folk out there. Took one shot and the antelope ran about 250 yards from my left to my right, stopped and looked up. It was a very stiff wind from left to right and I knew my elevation was correct so I aimed farther into the wind and she didn't take another step.

Apparently I suck at picking days to go shooting. It'd be nice to get out on a calm day once in a while! Haha

I've shot targets as far as 600 yards... but not often and never for any reason that mattered.

Farthest "one shot kill" on a living critter was 396 yards on a woodchuck with my .204Ruger. Where I hunt(ed), there was almost never chances to shoot farther than about that distance.

I shot F-class, TR , for a few years, and shot in a handful of matches at 1000 yds. Rifle was a Savage 110 action, rebarrelled with a 26", .308 factory heavy, fluted barrel with a low round count. Rifle was equipped with a match type Sinclair bipod, scope is a 6-24X Burris XTR. Load was 175Gr Sierra MK with a reasonable charge of Varget. F-TR allows unlimited spotters, so every string involves a shot or two for most folks to confirm their zero before going for record. Distance and come ups are known, and most folks with a clue are usually "in the black" from the start. The black scoring rings are 5 ft in diameter.

One memorable string, , I was on the far left of the firing line, and could see the wind flags through my scope for every shot. When the flag closest the targets dropped, I would shoot. The firing line was reasonably protected from wind, but downrange, wind was a factor. I don't recall my scores that day w/o checking my log book, but I clearly recall that the last two shots of the day, and the weekend match, were both X's. That's a 5 inch circle at 1000yds. I was really tickled to end so well.

Not sure of the exact range, but the tangent sight on my Spanish 1916 Mauser was set at 2,000 meters, and I was shooting at an abandoned car on a sand bank on the other side of the Mississippi River. Of course, those old Chevies are pretty big, and I don't know exactly where I hit it, but it went clang, so it counted.

I had a few shots on ground squirrels in excess of 600 yds (with a few warm-up shots) with my 22-250.

About 320 yds on a ground squirrel with a 22LR (again, several ranging shots).

I'm not a hunter but I do an annual prairie dog shoot and I'm getting pretty good at it with 5 years now under my belt. My max kills at 400-425, most of them are 150-250. I can't say any of the hits are "walked in" because the dogs typically won't let that happen, you either take them or you don't for the most part.

My favorite one yet happened on the trip this summer:
I had a bead on a dog on a hill -- but there were actually 2 on this hill about 2 feet apart, distance was around 200 yards. Both were standing pretty. I selected the dog on the right and sent a shot at him. It nailed him solidly, took him off his feet and threw him a foot in the air, LEFT across an arc.

This poor dog landed right on top of the other dog, it scared the hell out of him and he ran to the right like he had a rocket up inside of him. He might still be running!

This was a Howa 1500, 24" heavy barrel .223 Rem, 50gr Hornady V-Max with a dose of H-335.

Perhaps my most satisfying dog was shot at a ranged 24 yards, with my three-alpha prefix S&W Model 52-2, two hand standing, took him out in one shot, 148gr Star swaged hollow-base wadcutter, 2.8gr Bullseye. Not sure which is the more difficult task -- making the hit or actually finding a way to get THAT close to a prairie dog.

I've made two other kills this way, at 15 and 14 yards -- but I've been out there in the field SIX TIMES over the last two years, these are day long affairs, 7 to 11 hours in the field, and I haven't yet taken my fourth dog with a handgun. There is nothing easy about this.

Longest shot I made on varmit was a groundhog at a little over 600yds with a
custom 98 in 243Win & 16x Redfield. 1st shot, off sandbags.
Deer my longest shot was 250yds with pre 64 Win70fw 308/ K6x weaver, off hand.
On steel I can't tell you, some where over 600 and short of 1000yds. I set some
guys up one time. They had full size deer cut out of plate and painted yellow.
They had them at exactly 400yds set with a range finder. They were all shooting
7mm or 300 mags. I snuck in one day when nobody was home and tuned a
Marlin 30/30 shooting Speer 130grHPs to hit the deer targets. Sucked them in
and took them to cleaners.

I don't care to try long shots on game.
Deer at 275 was my longest.

Didn't need that many to win, he only got 3.

FIL bet me I couldn't hit a cottontail. If I won, he would cook it for dinner.

Sat down, drew a bead and nailed it thru the head exactly where I was aiming.

Ruger Blackhawk, 357, 84 long steps. One shot.

Longest rifle shot was 347 yds, 8x57 M98K, open sights, 11 point white tail. 150 gr Speer Hot Cor over a good load of IMR4320. One shot.

Longest 22LR shot was turkey buzzard, in flight, 230 approximate yards. 4 witnesses on that hit and two of them are still living. Remington Fieldmaster made around 1953 from what my Dad told me.

I shot a deer with a Remington semi auto 30-06 (model number escapes me right now) at 300 yards and it was a quartering away shot. I hit right between back left leg and the rib cage and it went right through the heart. It was a getting out of the stand thing when I turned around and he was right there and was about ten feet from going into wood line.

Roughly 880 yards on a standard IPSC steel using a custom 6.5 Creedmoor on a Kelbly action that I barreled myself. Last stage of the day at a PRS match.

I think the targets were something like 300 yards, 425 yards, 600 something, and then roughly 880 with two shots on each. I hit the first two, missed the third one altogether with no spotting of my misses and pretty much gave up on the last target. But I dialed my elevation and held for what I guessed the wind would be and I was surprised to get two hits on it. Nice way to end the day.

I've had chances to connect at 1,000 and 1,200 yards but I wasn't able to pull it off in the 2 shots I had at the matches and I never got the chance to confirm my data out to that distance.

Furthest shot? 1000yd 20" steel gong. Typically 1st or 2nd round hits these days. On game? Furthest deer was about 300 yards, though I would not be afraid to shoot out to 500 in calm wind.

My best shot ever was about 140 yards or so on a coyote in a dead broadside run. 1st round hit, and no one with me could believe that had just happened. I didn't believe it either at first honestly.

I have hit an Steel IPSC target at ~1000 yards with a few different rifles, the most challenging was probably a 1943 Mosin Nagant PU sniper, because of the 3.5X glass. That was handloads, here is the same rifle at ~700 yards with crappy surplus ammo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lqKEugctjg).

There is a 950 yard plate at my local range, have hit that a bunch of times with several rifles.

Went 3 in a row, on a IPSC steel at 470 yards with a 1917 Mauser (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWOePGiaBcM) with iron sights, that was pretty fun.

Best overall shot was probably a Prairie dog at about 850 yards, based on the drop. It was farther than my buddies 800 yard range finder could range.
The nice thing about shooting at P dogs that far away, is they generally let you take a few shots about them before they go down. Took me three shots to hit him, I guessed low on the range and my first shot fell short. I corrected my hold, and the 2nd shot hit a hair low and one dog-width down wind. Kicked dirt on him, and he ran to his hole, but didn't go in. Third shot dumped him. He was a fat one, probably as big around as a 2 liter soda bottle, but not as tall. This was with a custom 6.5-06, 140gr AMAX

Now have a few rifles that can accurately shoot more than 100 yards easily... but don't have a range near me more than 100 yards where I can try that. So... longest target I know for sure I hit was 300 yards with my M16 in basic training Ft Dix 1971. Was one of those man-sized targets that would pop up at various distances at random out to 300 yards, stay there for about 5 seconds and then drop back down if not hit. As soon as it was hit though, it dropped right back down. One popped up way out at 300 and I remember thinking to myself even though its way out there don't take to long to aim or it's gone... I shot and it dropped well before the 5 seconds, and the "counter guy" behind me recording everything marked it as a hit. Could I do that again with my 65 year old eyes now? Probably not within 5 seconds... that's for sure :-)

I do remember when hunting groundhogs as a kid on the farm with my .22, I shot at a HUGE rock outcrop in the field that was probably a good 4-500 yards away. I remember being amazed at the amount of time between when I pulled the trigger and saw debris fly from the top of the rock. As a kid, I thought bullets leave the gun and instantly hit the target.

I’ve done some 6-800 yard shots at the range, but it took multiple rounds to get on target.

My longest shot on game was a doe antelope at about 475 yards (didn’t have a range finder that trip, was paced off by 3 people and averaged). Single shot to the chest put her down, probably the best rifle shot I’ve ever made.

Most of my shots on big game are 250 or less, and only one range around here has targets at more than 300 yards.

455 yard on a 14 gong with a non magnified red dot in fading light and 20kt cross wind from a bag. One of the longest shots I've ever taken.

Other fun one, though not a rifle was a 20" gong at 185 yards. Landed the first shot with my 5" 629 in 44 mag. My buddy thought I was gonna jump 10 feet in the air after that one:D

My best were offhand shots. 115 yards off hand at a huge 9 point buck. Field dressed at 213 lbs. 12 gauge Remington 1100.

The other was approaching an antelope I'd dropped at over 300 yards with a .243 and old cheap scope. Got within 100 yards and it jumped up to escape. Shouldered and fired as fast as I could to prevent a loss and made a head shot while it was moving. Dad thought I was messing my pants after making that shot.
