Springfield Range Officer Champion is a not-quite-Commander 4" bushingless.

Nothing a normally active female can't handle, if she hasn't been propagandized by Internet Experts and store clerks trying to sell her a revolver.
At least the Ladies I shoot with don't seem to have any trouble, teenybopper to Grandmother.

In addition to the Colt and Springfield models mentioned above, Dan Wesson's Guardian comes in 9mm or .45 acp but it is a bobtail commander if that makes any difference. Those are the three I would consider, each in a different price range. At Bud's they are:

1. Springfield Range Officer -- $728
2. Colt Lightweight Commander -- $847
3. Dan Wesson Guardian -- $1333

An aluminum frame 1911 is normally higher priced than a steel frame 1911.

Recently checked out the Springfield EMP4 . Commander size (4 inch), 9mm , I believe frame is alloy but may be steel . Grip is thinner and shorter front to back than normal commander . Grip would probably suit a female better than standard frame .

Springfield's website says the EMP4 is an alloy frame.

I'd never heard of it.... specs on it are impressive. 31 oz weight.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. She's real petite but also a rock climber so she's got decent strength for such a teeny thing. Not exactly places around here we can try stuff out so she's limited to what I have on hand which isn't much but I figure if I got her a smaller lighter 1911 I could at least know what i'm working with.

Commander is a "right sized" .45 for a carry weapon; However, I would lean towards a steel frame myself unless she isn't going to be shooting it a lot.

Stick with Colt.

Dan Wesson Valkyrie.

Another good choice, might be SA EMP 4" due to its smaller grip.

OK, which is it?
Is she at all familiar with the type and really wants one?
Or are you figuring what she needs?

The reason I ask, there was a Lady here who heard the mystique of the 1911 so I furnished her one on long term loan. She seemed to plateau out early and low. A good coach watched her shoot and handed her a Glock. She is doing better now, up to SSP Marksman in IDPA with her own G34 and ready to move up if her schedule permitted more practice.

Huh? Under $900 ($872 at Buds) is a great price for any new Colt 1911 with the features the Colt LW Commander has.

Unless this is going to be a carry gun, you ought to let her try a full size. Rent one at your local indoor shooting range.

When I worked at the gun shop range our full size Kimber 45 was popular with ladies of all ages. We had group of women that shot at the range weekly and always rented the full size Kimber 45.

When I was younger and only had a full size Colt Series 70 Govt, I taught plenty of women of all ages and sizes to shoot it. 45 acp out of full size 1911 just doesn't have harsh recoil.

"...Colt LW Commander ain't cheap..." That's because it has 'COLT' stamped on it.
Springfield makes a 4" EMP in 9mm too. Not exactly cheap either though. Running between $900 and a grand. Take your lady friend shopping to let her try one on for size.

The Springfield EMP4 Champion is definitely worth looking into if she has smaller hands. It has a full length grip the same a regular Commander or Government size 1911 but the grip frame is shorter front to rear and narrower and they've shortened the reach to the trigger and controls. I bought one for my 14 year old son to shoot in action pistol and 3 gun, he's small, like 5'1", 107lbs, and really fits him well. He shot a Hi Power last year and we've tried regular 1911s and some other guns but they're just too unwieldy for him to get a good grip on, he has to keep shifting his grip. Changing to the EMP4 resulted in an immediate improvement in his accuracy and speed. The recoil is very manageable.

The gun itself is very well fit and finished and nicely set up when compared to regular 1911s in the same price range. You've got a fiber optic front sight, checkered MSH, a sort of golf ball style textured front strap, ambi safety, ball cuts, 4" bull barrel (same length as the full size Springfield Champions), aluminum trigger, etc.. It comes in a very nice case with 3 10rd mags, plus a plastic holster and double mag pouch. A nice gun in a nice package and well worth the money.

Oh, and some of the holster makers are already making gear for it. I got a holster and triple mag pouch set up from Garrett Industries that fit it perfectly. This is his set up-

Nice thing is, I would think. Go with a light revolver, as many custom shops don't go below 4". Many Smith and Wessons or Taurus, would fit bill much better than a 1911 so light and small. Just my opinion.

That I like very well. Pro Carry II in 9mm (Actually a little shorter than a regulation commander size slide)...

https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7576/16061067119_23c481af33.jpg

I like the Kimber and have had NO problems with it... I also like the Springfield guns as well - but do not have a 9mm commander from them at this time. Very fine guns.

I thought the O/P stated he / she wanted a 9mm. Maybe it was changed after the first post or everyone just ignored that point. 9mm guns in this size package are very easy to shoot. I'll let everyone else kick you around for picking a gun for your girlfriend.

There are several 1911's that fit the mold. I favor the DW Guardian. It's an excellent 1911.
