'Was called to "unscheduled" RSO duties today, and so took the
Sharps 45-70 to do final dial-in for Steel Pigs-in-Space.

It's loaded w/ a heavy Paul Jones 540gr Creedmores (1:30) over
64gr Swiss 1½ (w/60-thou card wad) so it's only drundling along
at a leisurely 1,200fps at the muzzle and a little over 1,100 when
it reaches the 100-yd pig. As RSO I only fired four rounds over
a 3-hour period, so it was as much a test of a blow-tube at 1-hr
intervals a it was finally finding the sight elevation.

When I took the pig down I found these 50₵ peices embedded
hard in the frame 2x4s.

You don't want to be anywhere near that pig when those bullets
change from from smooth-sided cylinders... to spinning circular
razor blades....

Yep. I attended a 3 gun match some years ago, when on a shotgun stage, shooting slugs at steel poppers, an observer/spectator said "ungh!" and doubled over... the splash back hit him in the gut. Did not penetrate, but left a bruise/welt.

It doesn't matter what you shoot, or at what range, there are only two options if a bullet hits. Either it penetrates, or it bounces off.

Bullets that bounce off ALWAYS go somewhere, with some degree of energy.

No, I wouldn't want to be next to the steel pig, either!

Shooting plate matches with pistols and subguns, I have been hit with jacket fragments, bullet fragments and once, a whole encapsulated .40 bullet.

Eye protection is a must. Long sleeves, a scarf, second chance vest, and a cup might not hurt.

Bounce-down is much more desirable than bounce-back. Angle the plate toward you at the top so bullets ricochet downward. That worked quite well for me on the half-dozen steel targets in my back-yard pistol range.
