What is the best scope and mount for this rifle. It seems that the rear sight replacement style is more fool proof. Thanks!

There must be a good mix of function, cost, and effort. Thanks, please chime in :)

Not too many people here think modifying a historic rifle is a good thing, so you won't find too many with actual experience bubbaing a M44. As a decent M44 by now is worth more than a cheap 308 hunting rifle from Walmart that comes drilled for scope mounts, not much to say.

brass stacker is the only scope mount that workks, w/o tapping the that is

not too pricey and no smith needed
as for modifying a historic rifle, dont sweat it, its not a permanent modification

What are you going to use it for? My M44 was plenty accurate off hand out to 100 yards.

Do you want to use a LER scope, or a traditional one?

Rear-sight type mounts are suitable only for long-eye relief scopes.

How does the Brassstacker compare with the S &K, isn't one steel and the other aluminum? Etc.
