So yesterday I went to the range with another batch of bullets to try and find a good combination for my Pedersoli P58 Enfield. It's got a 1:48 twist with 5 grooves.

I had previously tried the RCBS-Hodgdon, which keyholed, and the Lyman 575213 PH, which drops at .575 and I need a .578 bullet. I had also tried the Moose 580 Wilkinson. Nothing gave very good groups at 50 yards.

For this test I made up a batch of RCBS-500M Minnie Balls. They weigh in at about 537 grains. I made up cartridges in 45, 50, 55, and 60 grains of 2F Goex. All were lubed with 2:1 Crisco/Beeswax lube.

The below set of targets will give the reader an idea of how big a difference your load can make. Notice the difference between 55 and 60 grains:

I'd keep raising the charge to where it opens up to find a hunting load now that you have your target load. If anything but 60g does poorly then that's your one and only load.
I use 90grs FFFg in my Zouave under the Lyman 575213-OS minie and 90grs FFg under the Lyman 577611 thick skirted minie in my Musketoon for deer & elk hunting.

60 grains was the service load - I would think that would be just fine for hunting other animals besides people. It is, after all, a 537 grain bullet. At 900 fps, it's got a muzzle energy of 966 foot pounds and an efficacy (energy in foot pounds multiplied by projectile cross-sectional area in square inches) of 253.

This has a greater efficacy at the muzzle than even a 30-06.

Even if you tone it down to only 800 fps it's still nearly on par with the 30-06.

But in any case, I only target shoot in the N-SSA. :)

It's a great visual example of what i have heard discussed. Thank you very much for posting it
