I possibly have a chance to purchase one of these that friend's dad had. Your thoughts on them would be appreciated. Thanks.

Make sure you test fire it first. When I was still working back in the 80s, the store got in six AMT .380 Backups. Five out of the six would not fire out of the box. After trying every normal remedy I could think of, I finally discovered that the hammers were cast oversize, and were not properly machined. When the trigger was pulled, the hammer was rubbing against the sear as it fell, causing it to slow down enough to cause the gun not to fire.

Just sayin': Test fire it first before you hand over your money.

Gyvel is right on, the OMC, later AMT 380 either worked or did not. I bought some for individual officers at the PD, as I remember it was 12 pistols of which only one was not sent back. Early mags had a metal follower and cast finger grip floor plate, later guns used plastic and were junk.
