View Full Version : Steyr M-357 initial shooting impression

Today I got my M-357 out of layaway and immediately drove to H&H gunrange in Oklahoma City to test fire it.
I didn't clean the packing grease/oil off the gun before shooting it. I shot 50 rounds of Remington 125g JHP and 50 rounds of PMC 125 g FMJ and 10 rounds of Speer Gold Dot 125g.

The gun reminded me of a 1911 with weird sites. The gun pointed perfectly. This is the only non-1911 that points this way for me. I prefer a flat mainspring housing on a 1911 and the M-357 has the same flat shape. The gun actually balances like a 1911 and has a natural feel to it.

The trigger feels like a single action, with a short reset, again just like a 1911. Imagine a 1911 with long trigger slack and a crisp 5lb letoff. No mushy sponge trigger like a Glock...

The magazine was rather difficult to load. The gun had no failures to feed, extract or eject. The brass flew over my right shoulder and the bullets hit point of impact. I will need to get used to the sites, I was able to get a 5" off hand group at 25yds. I want to add I was excited about getting a new gun and my hands were shaking.

The finish on the slide looks like baked on enamel or shipping glaze that I have yet to remove. I saw an M-40 in another store and the slide was flat black like a chaulk board and was greyish in color. This guns slide looks shiny like a CZ-75 and is black.

My initial impressions with the gun are extremely favorable and are as high as I have ever had regarding a factory firearm.

The recoil reminded me of a Sig 220 loaded with 230g hardball, that's nice and snappy with about 3inches of muzzle rise. I want to add the fact that I limp wrist when I shoot because I shoot more accurately this way.

What more can I say? This gun kicks major butt and I couldn't be happier. This is the best factory non custom pistol I have ever shot. Here is a short list of some guns I either own or have owned:

-Glock 33
-Glock 19
-Glock 21
-Glock 17
-Glock 20
-Glock 23
-Glock 27
-Heckler & Koch USP .40
-Brno CZ-75
-Sig Saur P-220
-Star Model 28 (all steel 9mm)
-Tanfoglio TA-90
-Colt 1911
-Norinco 1911
-Springfield Army 1911
-Beretta 92F
-Ingram MAC 10 (Powder Springs GA)
-SWD M-11 9mm (Cobray)
-Heckler & Koch VP-70z 9mm
-Ruger 22 Mrk 2
-Browning High Power
-Walther P99 .40
-Walther PPK/S
-Grendal .380

From my initial impression, there is no doubt in my narrow far right wing mind the Steyr M-357 is the best of the .357 sig bunch. Then again, I have only shot 110 rounds through it. If I put 900 more rounds w/o a malfunction, then I will be in a position to further review this pistol from a more experienced viewpoint.

I have shot tens of thousands of rounds through various pistols and again, this Steyr left me feeling like I may have reached Handgun Nirvana...

Thanks for the M357 report. In the last couple months, I've shot 2000 rounds through my first M357 and by next weekend, I'll hit 1500 with my second M357.

Bottom line: I think it's a major winner and other guns in the same size will be hard pressed to meet or exceed the Steyr M357 functionality and shootability.

I'm hoping that eventually a good third party barrel company will adopt the Steyr. I'd love to get a 5" barrel for it to zip up my loads another 100 fps.

cheers,
pete

Thanks for the info; I may have to add it to the Sig/HK/Glock .357 crowd.

I am eagerly awaiting the S-357!
A 10 round pocket rocket with rails to mount a light (for bedside)....I think that is going to be a real gem!

Are they going to make an S357? I thought the subcompacts were only coming in 9 and 40. As I have yet to see one "live", please comment on the grip angle of these pistols.

I recently talked with a rep at GSI. They will definitely support the S9 and S40. The S357 will be last as usual. In order to create demand, I'm putting down a deposit at my gun shop so they can monthly bug GSI that customers want S357's. I suggest you guys each save up $50 and do the same :)

I think the s series will be hot. I just heard that SIG is coming out with a subcompact sigpro polymer pistol to compete in this arena. I'm not sure but it might have a manual safety as well. At least, there is a full size sigpro with a manual safety that might be hitting this market --- mostly due to the political nature of the U.S.

I guess some people actually think of a manual safety as a lock instead of a toggle switch :) OK, OK, I know that manual safeties have their place :)

Have had an M40 since last March. It is a better gun than the Glock 23. More accracy @ +25 yds. certainly less muzzle flip and that absolutely Great trigger!. Good Post BTW.

Have had my M40 for a while, and love it. The packing grease is annoying, they spread it on like butter on toast, but once you degunk the slide, it's a great black color.

Accurate with the right ammo, reasonable recoil out of the Hot 40's, and the sights make second, third and triple taps in general very easy..

I'm waiting for the S9 for my gf... Of course when I get one, it might be the perfect bedside buddy...

A local gun shop has a used Steyr for sale. I didn't know much about this gun, so I didn't even notice the price. (I was there to look at Sigs) What are they going for new? Sounds like a nice pistol. Thanks.

See where the pin goes through the trigger in the above picture? If that used Steyr looks like this, it needs an upgrade. Compare this with the picture below. As you can see, the upgraded trigger pin is a lot higher.

I was getting a price check on an M357 today, I looked over the shop owner's shoulder and saw a listing for an s357! I asked about it, it's the same price as the M357. Not sure if it was right, and I wasn't ready to order having never seen one. But maybe it's out there. Gotta go, tales of the gun is on.

I recommend that you stay clear of the used Steyr. The information on these boards (and others) indicate that the manufacturer has not fully debugged this design. I see a lot of used Steyrs at gun shows & shops. This is particularly disconcerning given the relatively low circulation of these guns...Illini
