I've always wanted a Model 70 in .300 Savage, but as a factory original such a critter would be beyond my means. Would converting a .22/250 to .300 Savage be just a straight rebarrel, given that the parent case is the same?

Yep - but, depending upon the present bbl's muzzle OD, a rebore should suffice (much less expensive than a rebarrel).

Most reborers won't rebore a barrel to whatever ID/caliber unless the end result leaves a bbl thickness (NOT O.D.) of at least .125" @ the muzzle.

Which means that your .22/250 bbl's muzzle OD cannot be less than .550", in order to accept a rebore to .308".

Reboring a barrel to a larger caliber typically ends up with less accuracy than the original.

Custom barrels typically have an inch or two cut off their muzzle end to get rid of the poor rifling quality in that area. Chamber reamers remove the bad stuff at the breech end.
