This is my only semi-auto rifle so not only do I get to talk Garands on here, I get to actually post in the semi-auto forum...LOL. I have been on the lever, bolt rifle forum only for far too long.

A "Special Service Grade" H&R from the CMP. They put like-new 95% metal from an H&R one in new wood. I am trying to figure out where they get 95% metal from that needs new wood - one would think if the metal was that good, the wood would be also. 1950's production.

Looks great! One day I will need one of these... if any are left by the time I'm ready to buy one.

those special grades sure look nice but in the end I decided to go with the service grade... somehow I just like those beat up old war horses.

Most of that metal looks like it has been re-Parkerized.

Just so prospective buyers know, the less expensive grades such as Field are perfectly serviceable for general use. They're half the cost of a Special grade.

I really only wanted a Service grade as I intend to shoot it, not put it away as a collectors piece. But dang it, I made the mistake of actually going to the store instead of just ordering one and they had no Field or Service grades....that thing just latched onto me and followed me out the door.....with a bayo and 400 rounds of ammo. Really, if you don't have much self-control just order one and wait. LOL.

Are running out, so for those wanting a shooter you'll need to get cracking.
Many years ago when the first boat load of Greek returns hit the CMP they graded them all as Rack Grade. Selling for $295 guys were snapping them up and the CMP put a 12 piece limit on them. I got a real nice one of them, it did need a real deep cleaning and the wood had plenty of "character". It is wonderful what a lot of TLC can do.

Thanks for sharing, I sent my paper work out about 2 weeks ago and am waiting for my service grade HRA now. Really hoping it doesn't take anywhere near as long as they've posted on their website but it could I guess. CMP recently changed the rules on NY orders and will now only ship to an FFL in NYS, hopefully that won't delay my order too bad. Your rifle looks really nice but I would agree that it looks like it's been re-parkerized (wouldn't be an issue for me).

Here is what I recieved from the CMP when I inquired where the "95% metal" comes from:

On our Service Grade Special rifle, we received the metal just as you see it. We received the rifle (complete) without the wood. Our best guess is
that what you have is just the way it came from the factory and never issued
or fired (other than testing at the factory. For some reason, the military
removed the wood. All we did was install the wood (and the metal parts that
go on the wood (butt plate, screws, etc.).

It appears they have spare parts that just need wood. Interesting.

That's very cool and makes for a nice rifle. You should be very happy with it, make sure you give us a range report on it when you get to the range.

800 for a 5.5 million serial, in excellent metal with original stock, dinged but with visible grain stripes.
its a face to face with no travel, and comes with the CMP case and COA.
I dont plan on shooting her, but would like to still be secure in my investment with the upcoming legislation. I figure the savings on shipping, and FFL fees, the cost will be about the same.
Muzzle is a 1, and the throat and receiver look mint.

I guess the only thing to do is pull the trigger.https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-78VVtslVoQY/UTR8Ck8QRRI/AAAAAAAAAmA/MbVhmOUyz-k/s720/2HRA3.jpg

Very nice Garand. That is a interesting reply from CMP. I was under the impression that CMP used parts that were well within spec and re-parked or re-blued as needed for the "special" grades.

I've had rack and service grades and wanted something that shot better. I ended up going with new wood, new Krieger barrel and reparked parts from the "Grand Guy". Well worth it.

I've only had black rifles, but looking at the fine lines and the wood grain of "just an avg garand" is making my mouth water. I'll have the money for property taxes in a couple of weeks, but...........

For what they are going for these days, should be plenty to get you at least a Service Garand. And give your gun collection a dose of history and class at the same time...LOL.

The CMP Specials or "Special Grade" are reparks with new Criterion barrels and new wood; Service Grade Specials are original finish metal. I have both, and and SGS is new, correct grade metal. The metal on the CMP Special is in very good condition, but many parts show a bit of wear under the repark.

Nice rifle. I put off getting a Garand for many years and finally got a "correct" H&R a few years ago. My favorite rifle to shoot ever since! They just keep going up in price, so those who want one better jump while they are available. A whole bunch of high quality Greek returns came back to CMP this past year...

Nice rifle---But, I am somewhat confused on the M1 Rifles that are sold by CMP as Special in .308 Winchester...Can these weapons in .308 use 7.62 Nato or are they regimented strictly to hand loading??? CMP does sell ammo (Atomic) in .308 which appears to be loaded to Service Load Match specs. Loaded with 41 grains of Varget, Mil LC cases and Nosler 168 gr HP.

This thread made me dig out the old Garand and give it a good cleaning. When we got it, it needed cleaning but never got it. Sat around for years, not being shot.

Field stripped, cleaned parts for an hour, and it looks substantially better now. Went from being so dirty I didn't want anything to do with it to considering taking it out to shoot it, but it cleaned up really nicely. Even have some ammo to shoot out of it.

The wood isn't as pretty as the examples in this thread, looks like it was used in a war, but the metal looks good.

Yes, they are made to shoot 7.62 NATO ammo, like the M1A/M14.
