AR-15 for M1 Garand?

Ok there is a M1 i want and the price on it is around 890. i have an AR that values a little over 1000. would it be a good trade? the M1 isnt in the best condition, and the gas tube seems to have been replaced. it comes with i think 8 clips for it. would this be a good trade?:confused:

I'd trade an AR for a M-1 Garand. ARs are common, easy to get. Garands can run up to $1.5-$2k now.

I would do it. M-1 as you already know is an awesome rifle. I could shoot bullseyes all day long at 500 yds with iron sights back in the day. What a sweet shooting piece. Get It!!

That $900 Garand can be had for $500 at the CMP. $900 will get you a pristine M1, Special Service Grade. New barrel, new stock and darn near unused receiver.

I'm new to this site but without knowing a lot details about that Garand, it's not possible to say if it's a good deal or not. Who made the receiver? What barrel is on it? Is it a GI or a replacement stock? What are the throat erosion and muzzle wear measurements? All of that and more would factor into the value of that M1.

Chris in VA has an excellent suggestion. Get the funds together and purchase through the CMP. I did that recently and it was really easy. By more importantly, you can get a rifle that's been gone over by a qualified armorer and is priced really reasonably. You can even go to the CMP stores in OH or AL to pick a rifle out in person. I did that and it was truly worth it.

Flieger has an excellent point- there is a wide variety in Garands, and some are worth $1000... some are worth more, some are worth less.

IMO, the best way to get a Garand for those without much expertise is to go via the CMP; they have less expensive military surplus rifles in decent conditions, they have fully reconditioned rifles in basically new condition (new barrels and all).

I would probably recommend hanging on to the AR if you like it and looking into the CMP. If that isn't practical, then I'd educate myself on what makes for more or less valuable Garands to make sure I received good value in a purchase or trade.

+1000 for CMP. I would "never" buy a Garand from anyone but the CMP while they still have them available. Do it or you will forever regret not doing it and at that price you could perhaps even keep the AR.

Depends on your situation;

I traded away a spare-to-me $500.00 Garand for an AR in "CAR" config in the past.

I traded away a spare-to-me $700.00 Garand for a 100%-matching Polish U/F AK with orig barrel built on an NDS1P recvr back in the day when Polskis were very hard to find.

I still have a Garand to shoot.

If you think that giving someone $1,000 for something worth $900 is a good trade, then yes it is.

It is if you look at the long term return on investment or the value of one over the other in 5-10 years.

Money isn't the only driving factor that should be considered on what a good trade is.

Ditto. The CMP is running out of affordable Garands. Darn near impossible to get one from WW2, for example. I got one of the last 1945's three years ago. I'm sure they're around, but not for the $500 I paid.

Depends on the grade. The WW2 guns in good enough condition to sell are pretty well gone- seems like the service grade guns tend to be later production. There are, however, WW2 serial numbers guns available, but they are reconditioned to where there is very little collector value.

The CMP Special grade I received recently has a receiver serial number that puts it into December 1942 production and it does have some WW2 hardware (it isn't fully WW2 correct, not with the new CMP stock and Criterion barrel), but it's all been refinished so it's in basically new condition.

Service Grade ($625 now) Springfield Armory Garands with WW2 serials are not terribly uncommon. I recieved one via mail-order with a 1944 serial back in June of this year. There seemd to be a spate of WW2 rifles (well, recievers at least) being shipped this summer.

It's all just a matter of what's in the crate when the CMP opens it up.

You can probably sell the ar for 1500(maybe more now). They buy two from CMP.

Sell the AR. Buy a CMP M-1 rifle. I highly doubt that this guys M-1 is worth $890, unless there is something special about it that has not been mentioned.
