XDM 5.25" is a fantastic, NIB 9mm range/competition gun.

P226 always comes up, but I have yet to shoot one.

I personally love my all steel Baby Eagle, which is based off of the increasingly popular CZ handguns.

Those are three pretty solid options, all under budget.

under 1,000 opens the field by quite a bit.
Are you looking for a metal frame? Polymer? Clay?
are you looking for double action/single action? single action only? double action only?
are you looking for hammer fired or striker fired.

personal experience has shown that one of the few DA/SA pistols I would be willing to buy would be the Sig Sauer P226. great single action trigger pull, no physical safety but it does have a decocker, great balance and very accurate. it feels good in my hands but every person is different. average retail is a little over $800

as far as striker fired polymer framed pistols go I feel that there is no equal to the Springfield Armory XDM. great triggers, very high ammo capacity, feels great in hand(again, every shooter is different), very accurate, fun to shoot, great at managing recoil, and it comes with lots of little goodies that are worthless to most but I find very handy to have for a range gun(like magazine holster and gun holster). they can be had for under $600 if you shop around but $625 is about the average.

There are a lot of great choices in that price range and it would be best to try out some to see how they work for you.

My personal number one choice in that price range is the SIG P226. I like it so much I have a couple of them.

Also check out the Walther PPQ. While a more compact poly frame pistol it is pretty amazing as a range pistol also with a terrific out of the box trigger with terrific grip and ergos.

Both these pistols easily meet your criteria.

I looked at three different handguns today, one was a used Dan Wesson Guardian 9mm , nice gun but was well over a grand & I'm just not a big 1911 fan

Another was a used CZ 75 SA Target (by The CZ Custom Shop) which I have being held for me while I make a decision.

Also the Sig 226 Elite, Big gun & very heavy.

I would say go for the 'gold standard' and get a Browning Hi Power. Stepping down next for me would be a Beretta or Taurus 92 followed by a CZ75.

For your stated purpose, accuracy and comfort are paramount and these will get the job done @ the range (or on the moon figuratively speaking) ;).

Truth be told, any of the recs in this thread will make you a happy camper.

Keep us posted on your decision.

I don't think there is a "higher level" than JMB's finest (arguably as everything he designed is "butter" ;)) the Hi Power? Have you considered it?

Try Smith and Wesson's M&P line of semi autos. They are great. I have over 10 thousand rounds through an M&P 40 full size, with no failures except those due to using very crappy ammo. I also have around 3,500 rounds through and M&P 40 compact with no failures either.

if you thought the Sig was heavy then perhaps a polymer framed pistol will be best for you, I still stand by the XDM9 but will also throw in the FN Herstal FNX9 since you seem to have an affinity for DA/SA designs. very decent pistols, never heard much gripes coming from owners.

For under $1,000 you have a hell of a lot to pick from. There really isn't a single best and as you have seen, there are lots of guns that fit the bill.

I'd suggest going to a shop, trying several out, rent what you can and see what you like.

Once you narrow it down, let us know what like and see what the masses think from there.

September 25, 2012, 09:32 AM
With the mechanical accuracy of firearms generally being superior to what people can actually make use of, 'accuracy' becomes a function of:

Ergonomics
Trigger
Sights (distant third place, but a possible factor)

The Walther PPQ has great ergonomics and a great trigger. For strict range duty, swapping out the sights is all that's necessary to have a fantastic system.

One of the best range guns that I have had the privilege of handling was an SA XDm 5.25" 9mm with a trigger job. That is easily in your price range.

I'll record another vote for Browning Hi-Power. Beautiful gun aesthetically and functionally.

If a BHP doesn't float your boat for any reason, the Beretta 92 is also a beautiful pistol with excellent design and workmanship. I consider it one of the best values out there when quality is considered relative to price. And you would have a lot left over from your $1K for ammo and range fees.

September 25, 2012, 10:27 AM
Sorry, I forgot you said 9mm.

Other than a Glock, my current favorite is a Springfield 1911 Long Slide. It is a single stack, 6" barrel, stainless pistol that I picked up used for $900 on Gunbroker a few weeks back.

It is a real sweet shooter. I don't like the allen wrench guide rod arrangement that Springfield uses, but it's a minor annoyance.

I have a Sig P226, G34, XDm9 and several other pistols, but I have to say that the extra 1" on the barrel makes a real difference in the accuracy department. Not to mention that it is a real beauty.

I love my P226s. I have one with diamond plate slide and another with all black nitron finish. Both with 4.4" bbls. and 15 rd. mags. The diamond plate has alumimum grips and a short trigger. The nitron with std. trigger and poly grips. They handle great and shoot small groups.

I've had two different Hi-Powers in the past a 9mm and a .40SW. Nothing bad to say other than get the bobbed or skeltonized rounded hammer unless you like a hole punched in the web of your shooting hand from a slightly too high grip position. Otherwise a high quality accurate handgun.

I can only recommend what has worked for me------Glock.
The others are fine choices, but the Glock has a good track record and with the money you save, you can buy a lot of ammo and extra mags.
The mags may be as important as the gun purchase. Mags can/are expensive and with the coming election it will pay to get as many as possible. I think when you look at the package, the Glock will be your choice.

I wouldn't get so caught up in price and getting the most expensive gun you can buy, go to a few shops or rent some guns and get whatever fits your hand and needs the best. There are plenty of great 9mm's that don't come close to the $1000 mark and are tack drivers. My cousin recently dropped the dough on a Sig 226, and no denying its a great gun, but he got all PO'd when I outshot him with my $400 Ruger SR9C and claimed the gun might be broken. He thought just because a Sig is top of the line it would transform him into a great shooter, and boy he was wrong. He never handled it in the store before he bought it, and it turned out that the gun isn't a good fit for him. It made him even more angry when I shot his 226 after him and put all the shots in a tight little grip on the head of the target.

I shot a friend's Sig 226 Navy the other day...that thing was magical...SERIOUSLY accurate. However, for sheer combat type shooting I can trigger reset the crap out of a Glock plus I don't mind treating them as tools. They get the job done for less. Ammo and practice is where it's at.

I really like my Browning Hi Power after I got the trigger pull to be half way decent....shoots nicely now ! I'm tempted to add another one or a stainless SIG P226 or P229 w SRT for something different ! 9mm semi autos are great fun to shoot.....right up their with slick double action revolvers in 38 special as far as ammo cost and very minimal recoil !

Ok, that makes sense now. I have a C-series Hi-Power, and it has the absolute best trigger of all of my single-action only pistols, including a Colt gold cup national match. It's just hard for me to imagine a better trigger or slide action. The slide is so smooth it feels like its riding on a bed of micro ball bearings.

I'm sure the CZ custom shop can do some good work too - not trying to take anything away from CZ.

Great recommendation. I was going to suggest another 'more frugal' choice as well (namely, the Arcus 98) as it's another hidden gem like the EAA for a remarkably fair price. I just get the impression the OP is looking to spend around $1K thereby rendering our "cheap" guys moot (perhaps).

The Shop/Range that has the CZ 75B SA Target let me shoot it today before purchasing. I put 50 rds through it. It is the most accurate 9MM handgun I have ever fired. I too had a 75B SA and loved everything about the gun except its trigger.
Still irritated with myself for not grabbing the 75B with the omega trigger that Cabelas had a year or so ago. I was fixated on the standard SA and what I thought would be an even better trigger. Dumb

The only 9mm I have spent ~$1000 for is the Springfield EMP.
Mine was a disappointment, but after two returns to the Mother ship, a replacement pistol, several more returns to Geneseo... it was shaping up. I gave up on it, probably a bit prematurely. Or maybe not.

These days, I would guess/hope that the new EMPs are perfect.

I have owned probably a dozen 9mms and most of them did not approach $1000.

That said, I only own one 9mm these days, and that is the Kahr PM9 that I have owned for five or six years now. I have no interest in any other 9mm pistols, unless I find a Rohrbaugh at a great price.

The only 9mms that I would like to own (again) are the HK P7s of any description and the S&W 469.

There are so many choices... so many of which might or might not work for you. The trick is to buy a high quality gun which fits your hand and you can shoot well. In the end as others have stated in terms of accuracy it is more about the Indian than the arrow. A Hi Point is mechanically more accurate than 95% of shooters are but that does not mean all of us can shoot a Hi Point well.

For me if you are willing to spend a $1000 get a stock gun like a Browning Hi Power, CZ 75B, Sig P226 or a 1911 in 9m. All these are sub $800 guns NIB the CZ is the best bang for the buck.

Shoot the crap out of it. Shoot 1000 to 2000 rounds out of the sucker. Then send it off to the custom smith of your choice. Talk to the smith tell them what you like and what you do not like about the way the stock gun is shooting. They can then help you setup the perfect custom gun. Before you have shot a few thousands rounds out of a platform you do not know what you really like or do not like about it.

This is cost you a bit more than $1000 but you will end up with a one of a kind built for you gun and in the end that is as close to perfection as we are going to get. IMHO

Just so you know I am not blowing smoke here is my personal result of this exact process.....
