passive retention??

Is this the holster that uses the adjusting screws or is that positive retention? Found a holster for my boys gun but wanna make sure its the type that holds secure. Tnx rr

Terminology can vary, but a passive retention holster is a holster with a tension screw or just a tight fit that prevents the gun from coming out too easily.

A positive retention holster is one that has some feature that PREVENTS the gun from coming out unless the feature is released.
Examples of positive retention are a safety strap, a locking device that locks onto the gun and has to be unlocked, or a holster that's designed in such a way that the gun can only be removed from the holster in one direction or with a movement that gets it past the retention feature.

Types of these positive retention holsters are holsters with a safety strap or thumb break strap, or a holster like the Blackhawk SERPA that has a mechanical locking device that locks the gun in until the button is pressed.
Another example are modern security holsters that allow the gun to only be removed one way, and usually require a twisting or tilting motion to get the gun out.
