I'm interested in another 1911, this time in 9mm. Smith and STI are the brands I want to pursue. Accuracy is the most important thing on my list. 1" groups at 25 yards is my benchmark. Anyone have experience with either of these guns? Are they capable of this accuracy? Thanks

I own an STI Guardian in 9mm and the gun will shoot exactly where you put the sights. It is way more accurate than I will ever be.

Hope this helps.

Not going to happen with these guns. You will be spending well into the $2k range for accuracy like this. Check out Wilson Combat; they make several models that will meet your accuracy requirements.

Thanks for the replies guys.

TD 1911, I was afraid someone was going to say 2K or better to get that kind of accuracy. I have an S&W PC 945 and my wife has a 952 and both will pile five rounds in a 1" circle. The 945 would be my choice but I can't have a "girls" gun! (I'll get flamed for that even though I'm joking) I'll heavy to visit Wilson's site.

Anyone else have thoughts to share, please do. I would like to get a 9mm to compete against my wife and get my man card back!

i get 1.25" groups out of my bones stock cz 75b (not a 1911 i know). i'm sure you could get close with an STI. my colt gold cup is pretty close.

I don't normally shoot at 25 yards, but I have a Spartan 9mm that i use in IDPA and it puts bullets right where I put the sights, every time. Standing offhand at 10 yards I can make a 2" shoot'n'see completely dissappear in 2-3 mags

I can't speak for the STI but I can talk about the S&W 9MM Pro Series; it is great. The trigger is great out of the box, the finish is very nice and it will shoot exactly where you aim it. I do think the finish on the STI is more of a "working" finish, the Smith is a brushed stainless. The Smith has 3 dot sights and the rear sights are Novak style. I have to admit I prefer the first version, the latest version with the adjustable sights just do not appeal to me. I hope this helps. If you run across a good used one for $900 or so grab it, they are hard to find. Good luck.

Thanks again for the replies. I got to fondle a SW Pro 9mm and a pair of Dan Wesson PM 9's. The DW's were mighty sweet!

What was the FFL and will they do across state line transfer? I can't find either anywhere.

You can't go wrong with a Dan Wesson. IMO, the DW is a nicer gun than the spartan or the smith

agree that the dan wesson is nicer than my spartan but find me a dan wesson below $600 which is what my spartan 9mm cost new Randy

If you get a chance, get the DW. If not, STI. STI is known for their 1911s.

If target shooting and accuracy is your main focus, you'll probably want fully adjustable target sights as opposed to combat sights. I'm not sure if S&W offers a model with target sights, but I know STI does.

Agree. Very good choice. I would have picked the DW over the S&W and STI also.

I was going to say the springfield 9mm 1911 loaded target is great, but I'd rather have DW too :P

The Dan Wesson is a great choice!! I have owned a CZ, who is the maker of Dan Wesson, and it was flawless. I wanted one badly but the one thing I did not like about the Dan Wesson PM9 is the front slide serrations. And it's not just the PM9 but ALL 1911's with front slide serrations. That of course is personal preference, for your purposes it may work just fine. Great choice, please let us know how it shoots!
