Rem 870 Barrel Marking "CB"

I have an older 870 Wingmaster with a vent rib barrel. It is a fixed choke and I was looking at the barrel to see what choke it was. It is marked, "CB". What does this mean?

Ah, Cyliner-Bore ??
I say this becaues I have seen "FULL" and "MOD". I have never seen nor read one that said "CB" ...... :confused:

Date code? I depends where the mark is located. C is for April and there's a 26 year cycle in year codes. Might be for April 1955, 1981 or 2007.

Isn't cylinder bore usually abbreviated CYL?

It means you are not looking at the choke marking.

I didn't think it was cylinder bore, since as zippy said, others I've had said "CYL".

I don't see any "MOD", "FULL", "IC" (or, even M, F, IMP) or anything else like I'm accustomed to seeing. I've had a lot of Remingtons and barrels and am perplexed by this one.

As for date code, I'll have to look at it again. It measure 25.5" in length. The receiver is a "V" Wingmaster receiver and it has the old lifter (pre Flex-Tab).

Sounds good to me and if it helps, where I have seen the markings, are at the 11:00 position when looking down the barrel, from the breech on the outside of the barrel. ... :confused:

I'm not up on the history of 870s; but, I have two barrels for my trap 1100: The original one is marked full and the second one, with screw-ins, is unmarked. Perhaps your gun had an adjustable choke (thus unmarked) and it's had the barrel shortened.

For some reason remington 870, 1100, and 11-87's quoted barrel lengths with vent ribs are rounded off to the closest inch. Every factory barrel I've ever measured was like that. A factory 26" barrel will measure 25.5", 28" will measure 27.5". One of the 23" supermag turkey barrel's measured 23.5". It is possble someone shortened a longer barrel and cut it at the post, but it is also quite possible the barrel has not been cut.

Just a guess here but I'm thinking they make all of them to 30"-32" to start then cut them down to whatever final length they want before threading for choke tubes. In order to use the same vent rib on all models they have cut the barrel so that the closest vent rib post matches the end of the barrel.

That's exactly how I made an extra "skeet" barrel for my 1100 Trap: Cut at the rib post and threaded for screw-ins; but, it's still marked "Full."

Well, mystery solved. I got out a magnifying glass and found, "IMP CYL" lightly stamped on the barrel. It was much lighter than the rest of the stampings. My middle aged eyes!

FWIW, a "CB", stamped into the left/rear of a Remington 870 bbl is the Remington Letter Date Code for April, 1981 - it's DOM.

Thanks, PetahW. Did Remington use the Flex-Tab lifter in 1981? I'm curious if this could possibly be the original barrel.
