It's not the prettiest but the best bang for the buck IMHO is a Rock Island tactical. The parkerizing looks chalky until it gets oiled but once it is it looks pretty decent. The grips aren't too sporty either but not an expensive upgrade. Mine will feed anything you put in it. As long as it's .45 ACP.:p

Consider a good quality used gun?

In a fit of stupidity I traded off a Randall for a $600 value package.

There are other idiots out there than me.

At an auction about 15-20 years ago I got an AMT Hardballer for $250. I could have gotten it for half that but for a guy in the back of the room who had apparently been napping until the final gavel. It is as accurate as my Colt Gold Cup.

Good Luck

Another vote for RIA. My 9mm tactical has been excellent. Only dislike was the smooth factory grips. Rubber checkered and stainless screws off eBay took care of that. Pic :

I put a Remington R1 in stainless on layaway from buds a couple of weeks ago for $618 shipped. Last time I checked Buds had increased it to $670. The new Remington 1911s have not been out but a couple of years, but it seems that most reviews are positive.

This will be my first 1911 in 45 so I am not an expert, but have recently done some research and shopping. Along with Remington and RIA, I had Para and Springfield GI in my final cut. Ruger would be a consideration for just above $600, but I have never seen one in real life

I can personally recommend the Metro Arms American Classic II. Around 500.00,it is a great gun with great features and dead on accurate. Eats anything i have fed it.

Ruger SR1911 is one of the best values going in the $600 range

Remington R1......599.99 and made in the USA its
fit and finish is twice as nice as an RIA which is made in Asia and while funtional the RIA are ugly IMO - Remington is the real deal and looks like it also
Rugers are few and far between but a good shooter if you can find one

I wont buy a 1911 made off shore, just like I wont buy an American Flag made in china........Life is about choices, buying American keeps it that way

The American Classic Commander(Metro Arms) is IMHO an excellent choice for an "economy" 1911. The only issue I have had is the factory magazine and Chip McCormick solved that concern. It makes an excellent carry weapon in a Don Hume JIT slide.
GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!!

Put me down for the RIA Tactical. Great guns for the money and they have great customer service should you ever need it.

Shooters Arms manufacturing makes an excellent 1911 in the $400.00 range. They use a forged and milled slide unlike most others in this price range which are inferior castings.

$600 Ruger SR1911, if you can find one they go from $620-$700 here.

Springfield 1911 Gi spec $570ish.

$399.99 locally RIA 1911

I want a 1911 soon and can't see paying $600-$900 now on one(poor and could use the other $300 for another gun!), RIA has have had tons of great reviews and thinking that will be my first 1911.

The STI Spartan is arguably the best $600 1911 on the market right now. The major components like the frame, slide and barrel are from Armscor. The internals are all STI. If you are looking for an "enhanced" 1911 and not a GI pattern gun, your budget pretty well limits you to either the Spartan or RIA. If you are willing to buy used, the Kimber Custom II is a pretty decent gun for the money and may be found in your price range or a tad higher.

r1 seems like a nice buy but i would have to strech my budget some. same goes with the ruger sr. ive been wanting one of those forever. just cant find them in stock.

alot of people recommend ria and sti it seems. all suggestions are considered.

ALSO, i like stainless 1911.

I bought my first 1911 last year. The SR1911 had just come out and I really wanted one. The problem was (and is) that I couldn't find one. I then looked at the Remington R1 but I had to get the enhanced version to get the type of 1911 that I wanted & that bumped the price well over $700. I ended up with a Springfield Range Officer for $750 and love it. I still want an SR1911 but can now wait out the buying frenzy that they are causing.

I had the chance to buy a Rock Island 1911 two years ago. It had a match grade barrel/bushing combo. The frame & barrel were the natural colored stainless & the slide was blackened. It was a beautiful 1911, but I was too stupid to know that it was at least worth the $499 that the hardware store was asking for it. Oh well...

Well I was going to say the Ruger SR1911 without a doubt, but now with all the positive feedback with the Rock Island Armory I may have to check that out myself.. ;)

I can say nothing but good things about the Ruger SR1911. I handled the Remingotn R1 at a gun show and it seemed quality as well. I'd buy an American made 1911.

MetroArms American Classic Government Model is a no bells & whistles gun that is accurate, dependable and fun to shoot. You could get this gun and still have money for a couple of boxes of ammo.

For a little over $600 the Spartan is the way to go.

I can't imagine something better than these two guns, just more expensive ones.

I'll prolly get blasted for this but I've got the Taurus pt1911 and have had great luck with it. Heinie sights, decent trigger, good fit and finish. Never had a FTE or other jam yet with it and I shoot the cheapest factory and my own reloads thru it. Really don't think it can be beaten for 500$ IMO.

Just my .02. Bash away lol81711

I wasn't going to offer up the first Taurus pt1911 critique, but since it's now out there, here goes... My wife wanted a 9mm 1911 so she could shoot something other than her Buckmark Camper. We took a trip to our LGS and she fondled an RIA in 9mm plus and an STI, but just had to have the Taurus pt1911 that they had in stock. I've got 3 Taurus guns that are reliable so I said "go for it". She loves the thing. No ftf's unless I let it get nasty dirty (because I have trouble cleaning her gun that she had the fun shooting but won't clean). It isn't as accurate as my Springfield RO, but it is plenty accurate enough for her. It was worth the $490 we spent on it. Now will it keep or increase in value? ...probably not, but it is a good bang for the bucks if you are looking for a 1911 shooter.
