Greetings all,

I have a question regarding 1911 sights that i was unable to resolve from searching the forums. I know the search feature isn't very intuitive, so please forgive me if this has been asked before or has been answered somewhere else. Google is having trouble reconciling "1911" and "glock sights" in the same search string.

I am the owner of a Kimber Custom II with tritium sights. I recently bought a GSG 1911-22. I practice as often as I can, and my girlfriend has joined me on several occasions. We are considering some other purchases, and I brought her to a couple of gun stores to handle as many as she could find.

She decided she wanted one of her own. I want her to find something she will enjoy, instead of what I think she should buy. She has already tried out a browning buckmark, walther p22, beretta 92fs and ruger mark III, so we rented a glock 19.

She really enjoyed the reduced recoil of 9mm, but she didn't like the grip (she said it was too blocky.) She also really enjoyed how light it was, and how the rear sight was a squared white U-shape. She didn't enjoy the square shape of the slide (she's an overhand racker), the trigger safety mechanism, the trigger pull weight, or the grip angle.

So, as personal preference, she decided she wants to get a 9mm 1911 with an aluminum frame.

Now my only problem is do they make sights for 1911s that have a rear U-shape, instead of a three dot or Fiber Optic?

Any help would be appreciated.

TL;DR - Girlfriend likes 1911s, but likes glock rear sights. do they exist?

I checked out that link, but none of those were what i was looking for.

I was looking for rear sights that are a squared off "U", like this one:

unfortunately, i'm not sure how to find one that fits a 1911. Are they interchangeable?

I google'd "U-Shaped rear sight for 1911" and only found black rear sights without the white part on it.

Added: Misread the original post and somehow thought the OP wanted a u-notch. The 10-8 sight mentioned below is not what the OP asked about. The general info might be of help, however.

The nice thing about 1911s is that there are so many options. Even if a particular model doesn't come with the sight you want, you can usually get a replacement and have it installed without costing too much money. The cuts on the frame do vary, so make sure that if you want to replace the sights that the replacement sights are compatible with the sight cuts on your gun. Many use a Novak cut but others use a different sight cut.

10-8 Performance makes some U-notch rear sights that are great for defensive use because they allow for quick target acquisition. I have one on one of my pistols (.140 in. width) and really like it. More info here: http://www.10-8performance.com/categories/Sights/. Here they are at Brownells -- http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=26673/Product/1911-AUTO-U-NOTCH-REAR-SIGHT

Novak also appears to have a type of U-notch sight available but I have no personal experience.http://www.novaksights.com/products/sights/index.html#descriptions

As far as the gun is concerned, I can recommend the Dan Wesson Guardian in 9mm. You would have to replace the rear sight but DW uses a Novak rear cut and the 10-8 sights do come in a Novak cut. I do not like to go below a four inch barrel length in a 1911 because of reliability concerns. This is especially true for 9mm. But, lots of folks do shoot them without problem.
