Model 70 Winchester in .243. Not pre '64, but very accurate and a nice clean 2.5lb trigger. Just looked it up, it's a '71 Model. I like to use it for shooting golf balls at 100 yds, when not deer hunting with it.

My current favorite is a Remington 700 ADL, built in 1983. It's a .308 and carries a Leupold VX1 scope. Very bare-bones hunting rifle.

But, I'm a fickle sort when it comes to favorite rifles. Who knows what my favorite might be next week?

But I like break-open single-shot rifles the best,,,
My H&R rifles are my favorite long guns.

http://www.aarondgraham.com/pics/HR-Both.jpg

The rifle on top is chambered in .357 Magnum,,,
I have a Leupold Rifleman mounted on it,,,
I explode armadillos out to 150 yards.

The rifle on the bottom is chambered in .22 LR,,,
It has a Bushnell Banner mounted on it,,,
Anything within 100 yards is mine.

I find shooting these rifles to be soothing to my soul,,,
They evoke my inner plainsman. :)

Out of several rifles, it has to be my 1980s Rem 700 ADL with a new .243 Win, Pac-Nor Stainless Super-Match barrel.

The rifle was a .22-250 that won many turkey shoots and killed a lot of woodchucks, but I haven't been doing either of those things for awhile, so the .243 is a better all-around cartridge for my present needs. So far it's gotten a running coyote at 190 yards and did a great job. This fall, it also spent some time in the deer blind with my grandsons.

After all the trouble getting the rifle re-barreled, I wouldn't go through it again for other rifles, but this one has way too much history to trade it off.

My old Rem. 700 BDL LH. Bought it used. Adjusted trigger myself. Put a Brown Precision very light weight synthetic stock on it, glass bedded and free-floated barrel. Leupold VX-III 2.5 x 8 scope. MOA with the right handloads, i.e., Nosler 130 gr. Ballistic Tips. Got my best mule deer with it at 400+ yards north of Douglas, WY some years ago. Second choice is my Browning A-Bolt SS LH .300 Win. Mag. Same model of scope. Also glass bedded and free-floated. MOA with Nosler 180 gr. Protected Point bullets (designed for the long .300 Win. Mag. in "standard" long action rifles.) Biggest elk at less than 20 yards; 130 lb. black bear two days later at over 400 yards in Montana in the Bob Marshall west of the Divide. Wonderful hunt!

My favorite, but one I don't have, is a custom LH bolt action .280 AI, perfect for every critter legal in the lower 48.

I'm really attached to my Savage 110 in .30-06. I set it up with a one piece mount, weaver steel rings and weaver 3x9x40 scope. Added an x-coil pad to the stock, a foldover cartridge carrier and a comfort sling. It is what comes with me into the woods. It's not my finest rifle but it is dependable, light, nice handling, very accurate and the accutrigger is great.

My favorite hunting rifle is a Ruger M77R in 300WM. In the 40 or so years that I have had it, close to that many deer have been harvested with it along with 9 elk, 2 black bear, 2 brown bear, 1 pronghorn (way to much gun!), a couple of coyotes, and for giggles a few marmots. I have a lot of rifles in quite a few different chamberings, but when I get ready to head out the door for deer, the ruger seems to find its way into my hands.

JT-AR-MG42:

That is a very appealing gun, and despite the high price (retail), the low ammo prices would balance things out.
Back in February '09 I handled one at Gander Mountain in Saginaw MI, by Fashion Square Mall. Have not seen one before or since except online.
There seem to have been very limited import numbers.

Having seen an original Enfield Jungle Carbine, and later handling the AIA version just before seeing Mick use his sporter Enfield #4 in Croc. Dundee #2, these brief exposures lit the Enfield fire, which has never gone out.

My Enfield "Jungles" have so much power in a handy rifle, it motivated me to buy my first (Lee) reloading gear.
The power, handiness of my Spanish FR8s (Nato 7.62/.308) make them just as fun.

Nice one PawPaw. When Bill Ruger came out with the Tang Safety M77 in the 1960's I thought it a very fine finished classic style rifle. I ended up buying the rifle in 6mm Remington with a Redfield 3-9x scope. It was my one gun rifle in the 60's, 70's and 80's. I think you caught a good one ... congratulations.
