I have a 1942 Tula 91/30 that has a 4 digit serial number. It's a number, a letter, and 34. On the butt, bottom of mag and bolt are just the "34" part, not the whole serial number. Is this a matching number rifle? It would be cool if it was but not a huge deal. Just curious. None of the Mosin websites really address this.

I would consider it matching. The Soviets and Finns often just put a subset of the digits on parts. I have many 6 digit serial numbers on the barrel shank and the last 4 digits on the bolt. I have a couple with only the last two digits.

M-N's that have been arsenal refurbished often got new bolts (and other parts)fitted and those bolts got the receivers ser.no. stamped on.

And since there were many , many millions (37mil) of M-N's made , ser.nos. often got repeated.

See the 7.62x54R site for a wealth of Mosin Nagant info.
