I am holding a rifle for a friend of mine while he is on vacation. He asked me to try to find out what it is.The gun has been sporterized so the stock is gone.It is a bolt action with a box magazine. The barrel is 26"long marked by a crown over the letters FAT over 42 , all in a rectangle in front of reciever. Serial #BH2294 is on the right side, with CL stambed under it. There are numerous other small crowns on pieces. There is no caliber mark anywhere, although the bore seems to be 6.5mm.
The adjustable rear site is snail shaped marked fron 300-1000m with even distances on the right, and odd distance on the left , of the vee. It is adjusted by pushing in a button on the right, and a arm on the left is able to be moved, and click into notches cut into the right side of the sight.

Thanks for any info you might have. It is driving him crazy.

Jnsn, try visiting http://attila.stevens-tech.edu/~glibera1/carcano/ and look at the Carcano rifle information there. This should help you determine whether or not the rifle in question is a Carcano.
