If this question has been asked, I apologize. I like my XD9 compact, but my grip on it is nowhere near as comfortable or secure as the grip I have on my RIA 1911. I was wondering if anyone has handled a "plastic" gun with a grip that reminds them of a 1911? I would love to find a quality 9mm polymer gun with a grip that is similar to the 1911.

STI 2011 or Wilson Spec Ops. I think the m&p gets it the closest out of the lower priced guns.

Wilson KZ 45, no longer made, but can be found used. The grip angle of the M&P is suppose to be the same as the 1911, but does not feel like a 1911 grip. Yet, it is one of the best double stack plastic grips out there.

Since it's just a mold anyway, why are more grips not molded to fit like a 1911? I'm sure there must be reasons, I'm just wondering what they would be.

Because it would reduce magazine capacity.

The Ruger 22/45 has a poly grip designed to mimic the 1911's grip. But it is just a .22 intended for target practice.

(and I also enjoyed reading the Dune books BTW)

How about a polymer frame 1911? Can't get any closer. ;)

... I just picked up a pair of FN pistols on Monday, one FNX-9 and one FNX-40. While they don't have a grip safety, their contour and layout is somewhere in between a 1911 and a Browning HiPower (pistols which I also own). Safety and slide stop are in very similar positions, by design. Trigger, in SA mode, is somewhere in between HiPower and CZ-75 (pistol I used to own).

Both the FNX's seem to be good shooters, though I've only put 100 rounds through each, so far.

Ruger SR9 (and SR40) isn't far off, and they are double-stacks!

As far as I know the H@K usp line was dezined so that 1911 users would be used to the layout and feel of the grip. You wold have to learn to cope with mag release though

Exactly! BUL Transmark made those for KBI. I like them better than the typical double stack 1911.

Ruger 22/45 .22lr...sorry just noticed you are looking for a 9mm....but the 22/45 is very nice, inexpensive, and cheap to shoot!

PITT, I'm surprised you said the XD's. I have an XD myself and don't feel that I can grip it nearly the same. I like the round panels of the 1911 and the XD and most polymer grips all seem to boxy. The 1911 seems more like a grip that fits the contours of the hand and the XD/glock/etc all seem more like a rectangular box. I was thinking someone should build a polymer pistol with a grip that has slightly rounded slab type grips on it, even if it increases the width of the grip a bit. Maybe it would still feel too bulky, but it would be interesting to test it out.

You can buy a polymer frame 1911.

The XD resembles a 1911 with arched MSH but is wider to accept the double stack magazine.

The Ruger 22/45 is fairly close to a 1911 with flat MSH.

Is the Charles Daly not close enough? What do you have in mind?

I was thinking of wanting an XD/Glock that fit my hand more like a 1911. I use what I believe is a high grip on my 1911 and shoot from an isoceles stance. When gripping the gun my left palm makes good contact with the side/back of the gun and I feel like both hands make up one unit and work together. But when gripping my XD, two things happen. My left palm does not make as solid of contact with the grip, resting more on the fingers of my right hand than on the gun. If I pull my left hand back, trying to place it in a position like a 1911, I feel like I am pushing against the fingers of my right hand, breaking the grip. Secondly, the knuckle at the base of my right thumb doesn't fit well against the(I can't think of the name for this part of the gun, but it would be the grip safety extension on a 1911. But on the XD it's just the plastic above the grip safety that the slide rides on) and it causes me to break contact just slightly at the base of my thumb and forefinger. The only way to keep that from happening is to slide my right hand around the handle to the left. But then I end up with a grip that would be more appropriate for a weaver type stance.

This seems really hard to follow.

Maybe? I have poor grip habits that cause me to think the 1911 is so much easier to grip.

And burger, it isn't that I don't like what you suggested, I was just hoping there was a high cap 9mm "plastic" gun that had a grip that I was more comfortable with.

I get what you mean. I tinkered with my Glock 21sf because of somewhat similar reasons. Bottom line, I tinkered with it and I made it MINE.

Just a thought. Try a new approach. Shooting should be like driving.
If you're a good driver, you can jump into any car and drive pretty well.
If you're a good shooter, you should be able to pick up any pistol and understand techniques and the physics behind ballistics to make you proficient with that pistol. Maybe not as good as with Your gun or Your car, but you get what I mean?

I was thinking of wanting an XD/Glock that fit my hand more like a 1911.

Perhaps the M&P with the small backstrap would work better for you--it's worth a try, anyway. Try it with the default medium backstrap first to see how that fits, and then ask to try it with the small one. It won't feel like a 1911, but it should point like one (at least it does for me) and may possibly be a good fit.

You won't find something that feels like a 1911 in a double stack design (because of the thickness). If you're talking about grip angle, that's a different thing.

Yeah, I'm not talking about grip angle as much as the rounded side panels of the 1911 compared to the boxed straight sides of the XD/etc.

Ruger 22/45 (as previously mentioned) was specifically built for this purpose.

I have to agree that the Ruger SR9 is the closest to the 1911. Also, the P345 is very similar to the 1911.
