I have $600 for a range duty 1911. I would really love a Springfield Mil spec in stainless. but willing to listen to peoples other recommendations.

Mil spec - simply because the sights on the GI are so tiny and with the GI ejection port's high wall will almost certainly dent brass. They are both great 1911s though.

I think that the new SA Range Officer model is going for about $700, and has some nice features. That could be one to look at as well.

GI or milspec -- +1 milspec. the upgrades from milspec are worth the difference.
For range use, adjustable bomar type rear sights are nicer like the one on the range officer --- nice.

For strictly range use the Mil-spec is going to be a better gun due to it's higher profile sights.

I own the GI. I mainly bought it over the Mil Spec because I originally wanted a close 1911A1 WWII repro type .45.
My desire now is for a more customized -mildly although, range gun, so I'm replacing small parts on it to suit my liking. The sights are awful, the higher ejection port is also a problem since I reload, so at some point I'll be having it lowered.
If you are looking for a range duty shooter, and not a repro-look piece, get the Mil Spec. The sights alone are worth it. I wish I had gone that route originally!

You already picked the best value in the 1911 market. Get the stainless mil-spec.
