Colt XSE: Replacing full length guide rod

I want to replace the full length guide rod and plug with a standard guide rod and plug. Is it a matter of just swapping them out? Or must I use the full length rod?

Just replace. Add a new Recoil spring also their cheap and you be all up to date.
