Springfield Range Officer vs. XDM 4.5

I am completely stuck between these two pistols. At first i fell in love with the Range Officer because of the fact that I've always wanted a 1911, but then I saw the XDM 4.5 in 45 ACP. If i could have them both i would but I am on a budget. My question is what would be the overall better gun for just all around use? I will be punching paper, carrying, and the occasional deer hunt(only with the 1911). I just want an accurate, dependable gun and i'd like to hear the ups and downs of both to try to help me decide.

To me, it's apples and oranges.

I think both guns are way cool, so it boils down to what you really want.

I'm in the 1911 mindset right now, so I'll cast a vote for the RO.

Yea, 2 completely different beasts. That being said, I am a hammer fired kind of guy and am waiting to get a 1911 as well - so my vote is for the RO.

I am by no means an expert on either firearm but I will list out some pro's cons of each platform to keep in mind. Not going to list them as pro's or cons, because what is a benefit to one person may be a downfall to another.

1911 - single stack/lower mag capacity
slim
single action only
cocked & locked carry/must train to flick off safety on draw for carry
accurate
many customizable options down the road
full metal frame

xd - double stack/higher mag capacity
striker fired
no safety
more "simple" ease of use/less training for carry - pull trigger/goes bang
polymer frame

Get a nice 1911 first. Then you can go back for the XD later. You will keep the 'Range Officer' forever.

I would get the range officer,I love mine accurate and so far not a failure of any kind.It will carry verry well with a good belt and the right holster.

Wow, like 99% in favor of 1911.

I guess the price is similar and I was already to spring for a 1911 - I was trying for a Ruger sr1911, but have been tricky to get.

So i should just forget the xdm till later?

I have a SA and a pt1911 to use, but wanted a .45 of my own and looking at xdm vs. some 1911.

I too would vote for the RO. The only drawback would be the carrying of it. To me, the Mil-Spec or GI would be a little easier/user friendlier for CC because that rear sight on the RO is quite large. I wouldn't want mine digging into my side all day.

But for paperpunching or OC- man, that would be 100% top pick for me.

RO is easier to conceal but may be picky about SD ammo.

XDM eats anything you put in it and has double the ammo capacity.

pick your poison, I've owned the XDM45 in both 4.5 and 3.8 compact. I loved both and shot both very well, traded the 4.5 on a 9mm 4.5 for cheaper shooting, kept the compact. I would never pick a 1911 over an XDM unless we are talking a custom gun...in which case I'd take the 1911, sell it and buy two XDMs with it:D

also info on them being the same price range is ludicrous, ROs run $800 minimum where I'm from, XDMs in all calibers run right at $600.

What i was looking at was the .45 bitone xdm 5.25 - which are around 75-775, which is the exact same as some of the Phillipine Armscore and the like in 1911.


And what I meant was that I have use of a Taurus 1911 and a custom springfield 1911, but they are in the family and not personally mine and want a .45.

most are saying they would go with a 1911 over a new platform in .45.

I just don't want to tinker with it - a lower end 1911 that is

the XDM 5.25 is the competition model, they are more expensive than their service and compact sizes.

armscor, RIA, Citadel, all are made by the same people with different stamps on the slide. all are considered to be bottom barrel 1911s. when this thread came about the RO was brand new and was being toted by every single magazine and arms reviewer around while the XDM in 45ACP had already run it's course. the RO was the 1911 koolaid until about 4 months after this thread died when the Ruger SR1911 was released and has been the most sought after 1911 since.

Here's a vote for the XDM .45 .
I had a S&W 1911, beautiful gun but just more finicky when it
comes to ammo. I have heard many say, that is common within the
1911 family, many will disagree I'm sure.
But for me, I have found the XDM to eat any ammo that you want to
run through it, including lead cast reloads. Very accurate gun, and handles
the recoil department very well. Capacity doesn't hurt either.

Good use of an existing thread!!! I own a Range Officer and pretty much use it for just target shooting at the range. I carry either Glocks or M&Ps. I use my 10mm Glock in the mountains. I guess now that Obama has his second term I shouldn't list what guns I own on the internet.:eek:

Ruger has had trouble keeping up with demand since the day that the SR1911 was released. there were no advertisements, no magazine write ups, no special deals or big banners at the LGS... they just showed up...and then as soon as word of a 100% american made 1911 from a company that doesn't make 1911s spread they instantly dried up, ruger doubled their production facilities and even resorted to halting all incoming orders for 6 months...a year and a half later stores still can't keep them on the shelves and Ruger can't keep up with the wholesalers demands.

I have a Range Officer that I bough for my first 1911 and like it a lot. As 10-96 pointed out, the rear sights are a little large for ccw. I think the RO is more of a target gun.

That said, it is a fine gun and you probably will be able to shoot it more accurately for target shooting than the XDM.
