I have a chance to shoot a winchester 1895 in .30cal. I believe this rifle was mfg in 1895. The only readily available ammo is rem core loct. I don't know if the rifle will handle the pressure on new ammo. It is in fine working order otherwise. The barrel says it is designed for smokeless powder. I believe the ammo is 30-40 krag. I've always wanted to be able shoot a win 95 but don't want to hurt myself or the rifle being that it can't be replaced. Thanks for the input.

If the barrel says "30 Cal US, it was made for the 30-03, (forerunner of the 30-06". Not the 30-40 krag. Basicly the differance between the '03 & '06 is the neck of the '03 is a tad bit longer. It was designed for the heavier 220 grn bullets, where as the 06s necks were shortened when the army went to the 150 grn bullets.

I use to shoot an orginal, it worked fine, but it does stretched cases.

Just a recommendation, use the ammo desighed for the Garand, its a tad bit lower power (pressure wise) the the factory coreloc stuff.

The '95 was chambered in 30-40, 30 cal US, 7.62X54R, and 405 Winchester, all designed for the same pressure levels.

CAREFUL!... I don't agree with the other responses. 30-40 Krag is far more common in the 1895 than 30-03. From what I remember the 1895 made in 30-03 was only made in a "Musket" configuration and is extremely rare and valuable. It's unlikely your gun is one of them. Can you post a picture of it?

I believe this rifle was mfg in 1895.

You might want to check that out, they only made 287 that first year and such a rifle would be valuable.

.30 US is one designation for the .30-40 Krag, also .30 Army and .30 Government.

A .30-03 '95 described on another board has the barrel stamp:
.30 GOVT.1903.

.30 U.S. is .30-40 Krag
.30 Government is .30-06
Both rounds were popular chamberings in the 1895 Winchester.
If you're not convinced, do a chamber cast or have a gunsmith do it, and while he's at it, he could check the headspace.
