FF Rail on M&P 15 OR???

I THINK I read somewhere that the front sight base on the S&W Carbine was WELDED on - not pinned, so mounting a FF Rail system would be hard - true?

I replaced one 9 months or so back on a S&W- it wasn't welded. I do recall seeing an old Olympic Arms Plinker (PRC? PCR?) that was welded at the flash suppressor and front sight base, but that was close to 10 years or so back. I honestly don't see S&W doing anything so dastardly, but I could be wrong.
