How many rounds is a recoil spring good for?

Depends on the pistol. A full size pistol may go 3000-5000 rounds before needing a recoil spring change, a compact may need new recoil springs every 500-1000 rounds (for example, a 3" or 3.5" 1911 .45). I usually keep a log for each pistol of how many rounds have been fired and when spring changes or maintenance was done- thus I have few spring related malfunctions.

On a Government sized 1911 - Para Ordnance SSP to be specific.
Any thoughts on what I should replace the spring with? Wolff, etc?

Run it until it Fails to Feed.
On my 1911's that happens somewhere around 7,000 rounds

Running it until it fails to feed is going to subject your frame and slide to unnecessary pounding while you wait for it to fail. I would recommend more like 3000 rounds of normal power loads.

Springs are so cheap and so easy to replace. Damaged equipment stays damaged. Set up your own schedule and stick to it.

Glocks-

G22- 4000 rounds
G23- 2,500 rounds
G27- 1000 rounds

Like others said, smaller means working harder with same full power loads, so change more often. Spend one extra night at home instead of eating out and buy a handful of replacement springs to keep on hand.

I have shot maybe 1800 - 2000 rounds through my P229. I'm guessing that I'll need to change the spring around the 5000 mark but what symptoms/issues can I expect if the spring needs to be changed earlier? FTE? FTF?
