ok, i am looking for ideas in a 22lr pistol. i want something that shoots well and will be of long service. i see my options as ruger and browning. i shoot alot of large bore revolver and have had a couple 1911's. i would want a bull barrel plus some thing that will bughole with good ammo at 25yds off a bench.

I don't know about the 1911 type grip, but I really like the S&W 41 that I have. It costs the same as a good 1911. I've never seen a pistol that will bughole at 25 yards, even using a Ransom Rest. Not saying that there isn't one, but it's very uncommon, at best, and probably very expensive.

It is the closest thing besides a conversion kit or .22 1911 clone.
If you go that route stay far away from the Chiappa (Spelling?) .22 1911
ATI is eventually going to release one that may be decent but it will be pretty stock. Go with the 22/45.

You answered your own question. You are certainly on the right track.

but I really like the S&W 41 that I have. It costs the same as a good 1911.

That's around $1200 in my area. More like one heck of a good 1911!!!

I recently purchased a Sig Mosquito. Great feel but the sights are a little screwy. Overall it's a great shooter that I think will improve your accuracy with a similar conceal semi-auto pistol. I like it but there are probably at least as good or better options.

I recently purchased a Sig Mosquito. Great feel but the sights are a little screwy.

Good choice for CCW practice IF you keep in mind that the Sig bug, like my Walther P22 won't have the long service life of the Ruger or Browning.

If you find a deal on a ruger mkII, you can't really go wrong. I love mine. Buckmarks are fantastic shooters too, but the MkII just does it for me. Just my 2cents

The Ruger comes in tons of variations. You're pretty much guaranteed to find a variation you like.

There is a very well deserved reason for the Ruger and the Browning to have a lion's share of the .22 auto market. They are both excellent choices. You can get a ruger in a 22/45 grip configuration to match a 1911 style grip too. Personally I like the browning buckmark more.

A smith 41 is a top of the line American made target pistol, and is well worth the $900 price tag.

IMO pound for pound or should I say price tag for price tag you cannot beat the Ruger mark III 22/45 bull barrel. It has a 1911 style grip (just smaller) which you said you where looking for. Bull barrel which you said you where looking for. Very accurate which you said you where looking for Plus the price tag will not break the bank. I believe I payed $275 brand new for mine and could not be happier. I put at least 500 rounds through it a week. The disassembly/reassembly process will be just that, a process the first few times but once your gun loosens up a bit and you become familiar with the procedure it is a breeze. As I have not shot the browning buckmark I cannot comment on anything about the pistol. I am sure it is a great gun and would serve you just fine. Good luck on your purchase.

Browning Medalist....most accurate pistol I own. I've had mine for nearly 40 years. Still see them on gunbroker sometime.

I have owned Rugers, Colts, Walthers, Brownings and even a couple of Smith & Wessons, and the Browning Buckmark is the one I would pick if I could only have one. They are all good but the Browning is just a little better for me

You don't have to spend a lot of money. Find a Ruger MkII Target model. They are no longer made but are available used. They will last forever. The 22/45 may have the same grip angle as a 1911 but the grip is much smaller and I don't see any advantage. From your short list, the Browning Buckmark series is also a great line. I have a Camper model and it is nearly as accurate as my S&W 41(which is in another price bracket).

I have the Mark II from Ruger and it has been trouble free. Great gun to introduce people to shooting. Low recoil, easy to handle, butt handle mag release = no accidental mag drops, slide catch, thumb safety The only comment that can be construed as negative would be it is not the easiest gun to take down. It definitely takes some practice but once you've done it a few times you will get the hang of it.

my first vote is for the Ruger 22/45 in one of their many variations....

I prefer the MK III myself... thicker grip, even though the new 22/45s I believe come with the grip changeable now.

on both you can get a heavy barrel in all kinds of lengths.....

I have MKIIs (slabside and bull) and Browning Buckmarks (bullseye).
The browning bullseyes were more expensive but good to go out-of the box.
Rugers needed some work and ended up about the same price (sear, grip, trigger). Equal in accuracy. Eats ammo with no issues (mostly federal, 510, 510B, bulk, 714).
I vote Ruger MK series pistols. Get wood wraparound grips to counter the steep grip angle. Check out the Ruger MK target model.

I have a smith 41. best trigger and smooth shooting but picky on ammo and for the price, You can get several rugers and brownings. I seldom shoot mine. Mine works with both SV and HV ammo but HV seems too strong
I used to have a 1911 ceiner conversion. Sold it after a couple of weeks. It did not shoot as well as the Rugers or Brownings and did not feel like a 1911 centerfire enough for me; recoil was just not enough.

I have owned 2 Ruger Mark II's in stainless, a standard and currently a slab side target. The target trigger is fantastic, it is so smooth. The barrel length is 6 7/8", the only option I may consider otherwise would be the 5" bull barrell Mark II target. The adjustable sights make shooting more enjoyable. Definitely stainless. If you are interested there is a gun shop close to me that has a Mark III competition target stainless for around $400 NIB.

I would go with a Browning Buckmark Camper. They are very accurate and beat any Ruger hands down in my opinion.

The new Ruger 22/45 with removable grip panels would probably work perfectly for you. It accepts 1911 grips, giving you an even closer feel of a 1911 with the reliability and durability of the Ruger MK III.

I'm still a big fan of the standard MK III Hunter if you don't mind the grip angle.

Either a Ruger 22/45 or Mark III should serve you well and not break the bank.

You'd have to modify standard 1911 grips to fit the 22/45...

...pretty disappointing...

You just have to knock off one corner, not too terribly bad. ;)

Ruger 22/45 with the bull barrel. Can't go wrong with that choice.

I picked up a Ruger Mark III hunter last week and shot it for the first time yesterday. Man I love that gun. A friend of mine has one of the older Mark pistols with the bull barrel and it still shoots great.

I guess...but depending on the grip pattern, it could look like a hack job no matter how well you trim it. Alumagrips wouldn't work. Hogue rubber panels might be OK...

Or a search the gun shops & shows for a High Standard H-D Military.
My P22 is great for fun plinking, I shoot the High Standard when I really want to hit something!

Finest shooting 22 I have fired and look like a work of art. Picked up a pair used for under a grand (for both).
