View Full Version : Keep a Sig 226 or swap it for Ruger P95

In poker terms should I stand pat or draw cards.

I have a West German manufactured Sig P226 and I have entertained the thought of replacing it with a Ruger P95. Tell me I am crazy! Sometimes you get an itch and you think you want to scratch it but as in the case of poison ivy it is a mistake. In order to go to the Ruger 95 I would have to unload the Sig because I can't have both (which is what I really wanted :( ) So what would you do if you were in my place?

You seriously want to exchange a West German P226 for a Ruger 95.

Seriously.

In the name of all that is good and holy, why, oh why, would you ever do that? Keep the Sig and hold it close to your heart. There's nothing wrong with the Ruger, but the Sig is a far superior weapon. Getting rid of it for a Ruger would be like getting rid of your Mercedes E-Class for a Ford Focus.

hahahaha, I needed a good laugh. The P95 is not even close to the gun the SIG is. The only 9mm I like as well as a SIG is the CZ, all metal ones.

I smell a troll!

Who in their right mind would think of replacing a West German Sig with a Ruger P95? Maybe I should sell my BMW and buy a Chevy. The Chevy will get me from point A to point B, but the BMW does it better. The The Sig and Ruger both spit out bullets, but the Sig is BY FAR a better weapon!

A West German Sig is a definite keeper. JUST BITE THE BULLET AND TURN IT DOWN!!

I can't say anything as a while back I traded a very nice shooting HK P7 PSP for a Glock 36.

You have to be kidding ....keep the Sig ....

The Sig is 5 times the gun the Ruger will ever be .....( all you have to do is shoot them side by side to compare them, and the Sig will win hands down, in my opinion ) .....

Keep the SIG!

Buy a picture of the Ruger and keep it on your person at all times. Save your money and get the Ruger later.

You must want the Ruger really bad. Can you explain why you want to make that trade? That is akin to saying, "Should I trade my Benelli Montefeltro or Browning Citori for a Mossberg pump?" I like Rugers and have a few but no way would I give a SIG 226 for one. Well maybe the Red Label limited edition. :)

I am a big Ruger fan, but keep the Sig 226. If it was for a P345 that would be a different story but NOT for the P95.

From a purely monetary standpoint, that's not an equal trade. OTOH, if money is an issue, you might be able to parlay the difference into ammunition.

There's no reason to keep a 9mm that doesn't suit you. There are hundreds of different makes/models of 9mm pistols.

Of course, a Ruger P-95 is cheap enough that anyone should be able to raise the cash. Here are some serious suggestions: 1) Collect cans and scrap metal for recycling; 2) Sell plasma; 3) Stop eating out for a few months; 4) Find a reloader who will load for you if buy the components; and/or 5) Give up a vice (smoking, drinking, etc.).

LOL Trading a SIG for a Ruger of ANY kind would be like trading a BMW for a Ford Escort.

but I'm a big fan of the P95 and especially the KP95 in decock only... I've got three of them.... and would not trade or sell any of them.

but to stop the Ruger promo and to answer your question simply.....NO!

NO, NO....NO!

Only because, why would you? I don't get this trading and selling guns.... sorry, if you have one that is reliable and good KEEP IT!

If you have a yearning for something different, then save up for it and buy it out right.

with the Ruger P95 you are only talking 3-400 bucks.

For your overwhelming responses to my insanity. As I said not every itch should be scratched as in poison ivy. I pulled out my Sig kissed it and said thank you Lord for all those good people on The Firing Line. I liked the suggestion to save my pennies and one day add the Ruger to my collection but not at the cost of my Sig. BTW I am not a troll just an ordinary guy who got off track. Thanks again folks

Good for you!!!

I couldn't possibly give up my P226 unless it's for another P226...but since I already own a P226 Elite Platinum with extended mag well grips and 20rnd magazines so the only model semi on par with that would be the Blackwater Tactical but I like the EP better

A Sig compared to a Ruger is like a Porsche compared to a Chevy.

Get the Ruger! Two 15 round magazines, a 32 round magazine, will last as long as the Sig, better customer service if it doesn't, made in the United States and you can buy a used one for $275. I don't think you are insane at all.

Roughly 25 to 1 in favor of the SIG.

except that I think it would be the wrong thing for you to do.

Like I said before, what I don't get is this 'need' people have to trade off a perfectly good gun... (luckily, you (OP) caught and destroyed it quick)

you read every month here about various police depts. taking in lots of guns and destroying them... the only way to be sure the guns you have are not put in one of those piles is TO KEEP THEM.

Just save up for a Ruger KP95 decock only model... the newer one with the textured grip... but with no safety. (they, Ruger, doesn't make them anymore)

I have to disagree on the far superior and Ford Focus comment. While the Sig might be a Good gun and better looking. (Looks are not going to save your butt) I am willing to bet that My Ruger P95 is just as accurate, reliable and durable as the Over priced Sig. As for the Ford Focus comment. I think of my P95 in the lines of a good old Reliable F 150 work truck. It doesnt give a damn if it get scratched or or dirty it does its job Very well.

May 17, 2010, 10:11 AM
I can see why you all would say that the Sig is a better gun but, by 5X or vastly superior is a bit of overstatement.

I have shot the P95 many many times and it is a fine shooting weapon. Vary accurate and reliable, fits my hand well and the 2 tone stainless version is not hard to look at. Now the trigger is were I can see the difference and where the Sig may be a better gun. The P95's trigger is a bit sloppy and the Sig's is crisp and smooth.

That said you could simply have a little trigger work done to the P95 to improve it for far less then the cost of a Sig P226.

I would however never sell a gun. I would only trade it and the trade has to be a fair one.

Had a friend of mine who would brag about his high speed Sig 226 with laser grips. We went to the range and he was very upset when I out shoot him with my stock Ruger P95. That said keep the Sig and then buy a Ruger. The Ruger is a work horse that lacks status, however status will not win a gunfight. There is no substitute for good Basics,Basic's,Basic's. ;)

Trying to think how many Rugers I own. I have a Security Six, .357 magnum. I don't own any Sigs -- yet.

I have a really kewl Spanish made replica Philadelphia Derringer, like the one Booth used, antique looking, decent shape. I'll trade straight across if you'll pay for the shipping.

Unless your P226 has constantly been giving you problems there's no reason to switch to something else, P95 or other. Wanting different guns can be never ending and you'll eventually want to trade in the P95 for something else. Sometimes all one needs is a different attitude and goals when you go to the range. Different handguns can only do so much.

Glad you decided to keep the SIG. Now go forth and do not entertain such thoughts again.

I have owned both of those guns and the P226 is vastly superior.

If I lived in a commie state and had preban 15rd mags for the P95 and only 10rounders for the P226 I would still rather have the P226

Threads like this produce nothing more than who can come up with the most clever statement!

The OP had to know exactly what kind of responses he would get.

We all know that the 226 is a highly regarded gun. Having said that; there is no need to make fun of a good workhorse like a P95 either.

LeeJack,

I am the OP and I did not post the thread as a joy ride. The Sig was passed down to me as an inheritance so I knew there was some value to it but I had an itch looking at all the newer guns. I honestly did not intend this to be clever or witty. I just wanted to hear some honest feedback. Incidentally that feedback did very much help me to see what I had in my possession. I am sorry that you feel that I wasted your time but I for one have learned a lot.

Leejack
May 19, 2010, 01:35 PM
You didn't waste my time sir. Keep the sig.

If you think that you might also like a P95, I think it's a venerable gun that will serve you well, also.

Trade it if you like the Ruger better. It's yours do what you want with it.
I love that most here say keep the Sig because it's better. I'm not sure what "better" means. Better looking, opinion. Better sights, better trigger, better grip, all opinion. I would guess that if you put them head to head in a machine rest they would probably come in pretty equally.

comn-cents, it "feels" better, and I know because I own both, the ruger is my everyday carry its not as dead accurate its not as pretty but it gets the job done and I dont feel bad about the accadental mistreatment it gets, the sig is my range show off gun, I can hit better with it with less "work".

I've been to many combat shooting schools/courses and have fired my Ruger P95/ P89 as does a friend of mine. and we have never seen a Ruger have any kind of failures at all. We have seen many much higher priced firearms have issues so that being said Rugers are durable/reliable workhorses that will do what they are designed to do. They lack status but status will not win a gunfight. I rather work with someone who carries a Ruger and trains then with someone who is a poser who carries a high priced firearm but can't use it.

Most definitely. Well said micro. NO ONE ever says a Sig is bad. "Not unless they don't know what they're talking about". People might not like them; might not like the feel; don't like the price; or many other things. But that they have problems is NOT something anyone will say. And I'm not talking about the isolated cases/lemons that every manufacturer has; INCLUDING RUGER. I'm talking about collectively. NO ONE says Sig or HK is inferior when it comes to pistols. Again; unless they have no idea what they're talking about.

I have a Sig 229 and a Ruger P 93 and love them both. The ruger is a relatively inexpensive, but absolutely reliable peice. The Sig is a more pricey, but absolutely reliable peice. Since you have the Sig already, just raid the Piggy bank and get a P95 for under 300 bucks and use it for practice and let the Sig sit in the safe.
