Rock Island Armory is now making two 9mm models in GI and Tactical. I picked up the last Tactical model that Centerfire Systems had left. The guy at Centerfire said that he had them all sold before they even made it to the warehouse. He also said he would be hounding RIA for as many as they could possibly get. I am super pumped to finally have a 9mm 1911 and for less than $450 too!! :D

$379 for the GI:

That is great news. My Rock Island has been flawless and is my favorite range gun, I will be on the lookout for a 9mm. Please give us a range report once you go plinking with it.

EDIT: Those are some nice looking grips too, I wonder if RIA will sell those separate so I can replace the cheese grater grips that are on it now.

Guys - I have a 1911 tactical too and haven't had much luck finding a "tactical" version of a 1911 holster for it. Anyone have a good recommendation?

The RIA 1911's have had excellent reviews, and for the price it's hard to beat.

Great looking piece! I got that email from Centerfire Systems and almost ordered one but I already had a S&W 1911 9mm Pro Series on the way (picked it up today and put 355rds through it, SWEEEEETTT). I can't wait to hear how your gun shoots. I have training and qualifying the next three days then I'll be posting pics and a range report.

What are you looking for in the way of "tactical"? Black plastic? Nylon? Drop leg? Security? How much do you want to spend?

Congratulations!

I was wanting a 9mm RIA when I first saw them on Armscor's site a couple of years ago (just recently started making them, though). Then I saw where STI was making them using Armscor's frame and slide so I ordered one. Probably would have gotten the RIA if I had seen it first.

Do give a range report. Very interested.

The old Colt 1911 in 9mm was a pretty good pistol, nice to see this.

good looking gun and good price. Give us a range report. I have heard that the 9mm 1911's with ramped barrels are much better but its hard for me to believe someone would put something flawed out.

That is making me give very serious reconsideration to buying a CZ-75...
I need a good all-steel plinking 9mm and have been on the hunt for weeks.
How many rounds does that RIA hold?

Those are slim grips from Esmerelda. You could definitely get them from her. ;)

what is the difference between the tactical and the GI ?

WC145
May 12, 2010, 05:21 AM
The GI is a basic 1911 except for a lowered & flared ejection port and a bit of chamfering at the opening of the mag well. The Tactical gets you Novak style sights, beaver tail safety, commander hammer, ambidextrous safety, and skeleton trigger, all for just $50 more than the GI.

This is a pic of my .38 Super RIA GI as it came from the factory except for the grips (obviously):

WC145,

This is a pic of the RIA in 38 Super I converted to 9mm. However, if RIA can make enough of the Tacticals in 9mm, that would be a much better way to go. I think it's great RIA, and Centerfire Systems, are making these affordable. Kudos.

Nice gun, what kind of barrel did you use? Is yours ramped?

Congratulations ...let us know how it shoots !

I really like a 1911 in 9mm ( and have 3 right now ) ...as well as some in .40S&W and .45 acp of course..... I hope you like it.

Holsters - I use Kramer horsehide leather holsters / IWB with forward FBI tilt .... http://www.kramerleather.com/home.cfm

WC145,

I installed an oversized match barrel, non-ramped. The slide in the pic is a relatively inexpensive Essex. I still have the original RIA slide in my parts bin.

I have to much in this one compared to what the new RIA 9's are going for.

I'm really interested in getting one of these. Maybe by the end of the summer.

Where do you find extra 9mm 1911 mags?

And I agree, a range report is certainly in order.

Where do you find extra 9mm 1911 mags?

Metalform was the OEM supplier for my original Colt mags, so I use Metalform mags in my 9mm Colt; $14.99 (http://www.cdnninvestments.com/199mm9rdblma1.html) is a decent price.

Where do you find extra 9mm 1911 mags?

I believe the RIAs come with Checkmate mags which can be ordered from Brownell's or directly from Checkmate (http://www.checkmatemagazines.com/cart/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=20). MecGar mags have a pretty good reputation for 9mm mags.

David the Gnome
May 13, 2010, 10:04 PM
I'm going to try out the Checkmate mag that it came with and see how well it works. If it works well I'll probably pick up some more. It doesn't hurt to give those Metalform mags a shot either, especially not at that price.

WC145
May 14, 2010, 04:39 AM
That's a great price for the Metalform mags. I have some stainless ones for my .38 Super and they run great, I bought a few more for my S&W 9mm 1911 and they run good too.

Man this is pretty exciting. Huzzah for RIA for making 9mm 1911s affordable to the common man!

Simmy952
May 14, 2010, 09:22 AM
That is a nice 9mm. I also have been looking for a 1911. Might have to look one up. I have some Checkmate mags for my .45 and they work well. Enjoy.

Now, if they would only drop(test) them into Kali, one would surely land on my hip

I have a 9mm 1911 - Tripp Mags in 9mm are the best 9mm 1911 mags, IMHO.

I read somewhere else that the Checkmate mags are the only mags which RIA warrants will function properly in their gun. That's not to say other mags won't, just that they apparently have the guns built with the CMs in mind.

Here are my 1st 10 shots, at the 10 yard line.

http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/776/targetv.jpg

Not too bad considering it's the first 10 rounds I've fired through the gun. :D

I ran through about 100 rounds without a single problem. I was very pleased with the accuracy and the very low recoil. This will probably be the perfect gun for my fiancé to shoot.

Nice shooting. That's better than I do with any of my pistols at 10 yds.

Thanks for letting us know about these guns. I may have to look into them, even though I told my wife I wasn't buying any more guns. ;)

Well, that price is certainly worth a double tap, LOL.

The 9mm won't be on the CA approved list for some time, if ever so I bought one in .45 yesterday from my local dealer :)
