Help me find a M98 Action?

I've done some searching and found old information - however, I'm looking for a current source of Mauser 98 (standard "long" length, not yugo 48) actions. I'd buy an entire rifle if need be - but I'd prefer to buy either a barreled action or bare action.

I have seen actions for sale, but the sellers "accidentally" didn't mention that bolts were not included. I do see clunker Mausers that were cut down for hunting rifles, and that might be your best bet. Some may have scope mount holes or other alterations, but I don't know if you care about that or not.

I don't have an FFL and the web site will not automatically give me a wholesale price.

Mine calls me all the time with deals, but all I want is Mausers for sporterizing.

This last year I got a number of 7mm Vz24s and Braz 1908 Mausers.

For a couple weeks I have been shooting a 1908 single shot in 25/35 loaded hot.

Keeping your eyes open for Bubba sporters will be your best bet. Sarco still avertises barreled actions; give them a try. Please don't tear down a good military rifle.

First - I want to say thanks for the help. I did contact the folks at Samco via email. I prefer a full length action but an intermediate looks like it might be what I end up with. I am leaning towards a barreled action if only because it will save me some hassle.

I'm not ignorant enough to tear down something important. None of the setups I've looked at are historically important enough not to tear down and do whatever I wished with. One of 3 million issued, re-issued, re-built, re-stocked, re-blued, re-stamped... :)

On another note - I see 8x57's max COL is 2.228 whereas the 9.3x62 is 3.29. If I end up with an 'intermediate' length action will I be able to feed 9.3mm reliably when loaded near max COL?

on your last post you stated : " I see 8x57 cartridge oal is 2.290.........." the measure you quote is more likely the lenght of the brass empty, on a yugo action 8x57 you could fit without modify the magazine cartridges up to 3.190" +- 2/100" and on german or czeck action ox57 like K98 you could go to 3.340" and some time a little more.
I only have one yugo action that I turn in to a sporter .308, but own several germans, cz and one brazilian that I sporterized in .270, 7x64, 8x64, and 9.3x62, some I left in the original chambering 8x57, and now I am looking for one more to build a .338 win. mag. ...hard to find actions at fair price in Canada...but impossible to bring in from U.S.A.!!!!
The days to just call sellers in the U.S.A. and give a ccard number for us are over ... too bad !!!

Is 9.3x62mm what you're planning on building? You will need a standard length action. If you build on a M48 Yugo action, 9.3x57mm would be an easy one.

Roger - typo. Was referring to COL which adds an inch. 3.29 is what I found listed for cartridge LOA for 9.3x62. If 9.3x62's going to be too long - I may hold out for a full length model. What should I be looking for? I don't precisely have my heart set on this caliber - but I am looking for an 'intermediate' cartridge - something with some bullet weight but without too much in the punishment category.

Javven, I would look for a reg. lenght mauser 98 action, k98, CZ, VZ since the Yugo is a 1/4" shorter to start , ok if you want to build a .243, .308. 7x57 or 8x57 . On a classic mauser you could fit .270, 06, .280 , 7mm rem.mag, .300 win.mag. and 9.3x62.
Concerning the 9.3x62 cartridge it offer a good knock down power with a 296 grain tip, a little more flat trajectory with light bullets, the rifle itself if I must explain the recoil kick I would say that is in between of the 06 and the .300 and again provided all rifles waight the same and similar configuration.
The choice of the cartridge it depend of the type of usage you want to doo, in heavy timber the 9.3 is excellet , across a lake or long shot 250 300 yrds not so good. I have all the above but end up most of the time taking the .300 win mag to hunt.

I have no ideal what it would be like to not be able to locate a Mauser action in one hour with a phone call and a 60 mile round trip drive to pick it up, again I have no clue as to where you are located.

You can also get CZ actions brand new for around $500. If you're interested in a 9.3x62, there's a guy on gunbroker who's been advertising barreled Mauser actions in that caliber for a while.

Sorry - I was also looking for information :) I've run google up and down looking for suppliers and looked over several.

I've had nothing but good experience with Midway but I've never tried to buy anything that would require an FFL from them - like all they do I'm sure it's straightforward. I've also seen much cheaper... But like so many things it depends on what you get for your $. Sometimes you just get to spend more $ - something a simple search often won't reveal. Other times you get what you pay for.

Well, plenty of standare length Mauser 98 actions were worked over for 7.62x63 and 8x63* with no problems. But the feed ramp has to be cut back and that is a not a lot of room to spare in an intermediate action. I would not use a Yugo M48 action for that caliber.

*In other words, .30-'06 and 8mm-06.

GunBroker.Com often has Russian Capture M98 Rifles for sell,
the Russian Captured rifles are usually a little cheaper, because alot of the markings were ground off, by the Russians. You could buy one of these rifles often for as little a $300 strip it down to the action, and sell the rest of the parts to recoup some of your investment.

Well - looking over the options, 358 Winchester actually looks pretty good. 9.3 is a -little- more than I want. Too, 358 looks like a possibility in either action length.
