I am noticing many more tactical .22lrs lately and am considering checking one out. So far I have the following and I am sure there are others. Can anyone add to the list. Of these, which would you pick? My main concern is that it should be reliable, I don't want to worry about ammo when it comes to a fun plinking rifle. I just want to shoot whatever I can get, no excuses.

- Ruger SR22
- Keltec SU22
- SW M&P15-22
- Sig 522
- GSG-5

The SR22 or get the Archangel!

I have a 10|22 that I put in an archangel stock. If you wanted to spend the $$$ you could get the Nordic Components kit also, but with the Ruger SR-22 everyone is pretty much opting for that. It's the same thing but cheaper, since it includes the actual gun, reciever, barrel, action, etc...

Now I've seen the price of the Nordic kit drop since Ruger did their release.

The SIG522 really caught my eye but I haven't seen one in person yet.

Have a GSG5-SD. Too much fun. Going to give it to my son. His wife loves it. (Caveat - There are some mods that should be done to keep it trouble free.).

Next would be the SR-22.

I bought the 597 VTR (not in the poll), but it has accuracy issues so I'm putting a new barrel on it.

I'd probably go with the SR22 if I were going from scratch; I did the 597 because I already had a "normal" one.

I own a SR22. I've fired the GSG5 and the M&P 15-22. All are very fun. My Ruger cycles more types of ammo reliably than the other 2.

The SR-22 is a very good value, given the cost of the parts, and Ruger 10/22 reliability is well-known. This one has run just fine right out of the box, with good accuracy to boot!

These S&W 15-22s have proven to be reliable for me, using good ammo... and mags are not terribly expensive, though they are a proprietary design, and I wish S&W made a shorter one for prone/bench shooting (They claim a 10 round mag is forth-coming).

The GSG5 has some short-comings that can be overcome via the after-market, a cocking-handle buffer, and screws that won't shoot loose are the most immediately needed fixes. www.rrages.com offers parts to take care of both of these issues, but beware if you buy used, as loose screws in the wrong places can lead to metal fatigue and failure (cracks). If you buy it new, and take care of those things right out of the box, it will last you a good long time. Function has been great with mine.

The Sig 522 has been getting great user-reviews and it uses Black Dog Machine magazines (including their new 50 round drum)... The price has recently dropped on them so shop around. There is also a special edition available with a quad-rail hand-guard if that appeals to you.

I have no use for a Tactical .22LR and very little use for a AR15. Am AR10 how is another matter all together.

The official reason is to mimic the ergonomics of the AR platform, which tend to be superior to more traditional stocks. However, the line between useful and ludicrous starts getting hazy; I've seen ads for the ProMag Archangel kit that just look plain silly (fake suppressor, real bayonet).

It isn't long before a person gets into the "just because I can" territory with these types of .22.

Ya know, you just about had me talked into one until I found an older S&W .44Spl this morning that I wanted more. Maybe sometime this year I'll plunk down the cash for a 15-22. IMHO, you can't have too many rimfires!

I picked this up this morning, mounted the sight and took it out back for function check... It ran great, and the best part is it uses Black Dog Machine mags and their new 50 round drums. The Sig marked mag it came with is actually made for them by BDM.

It comes with two butt pads (I prefer the long one but I am 6'1"), as well as two blocks you can use to convert the sliding stock from 3 positions to 2 positions.

The trigger is excellent and construction is solid... the barrel is threaded 1/2x28, and the flash hider is removable! It will make a nice addition to my growing accumulation of Tacti-cool .22s! :D

GSG-5 if you dont have a problem stripping it and adding a few aftermarket parts to keep it going.

I have over 10k rounds through mine and the only problem Ive ever had was failure to fires, which is surprising with Minimags.

Only other problem Ive had with it is going through about 1500rds at the range and the bolt sticking from being so dirty.

Other than that, I love it. So fun to shoot, accurate, reliable for a .22, and did I mention its SO FUN TO SHOOT!

Oh, and by the way, Id suggest getting the black model. I have the Titanium 1st anniversary edition and as much as it looks cool, the titanium paint chips easily. So much that in a year itll be so bad, that I plan on powdercoating it black.

Let's start with a preference for the pistol gripped, straight stock format of the AR-15 family, then.... let’s suppose you are going after treed coons at night, then the right "tactics" might include a light, and having it mounted to your rifle makes some sense.

Or... you are going after prairie dogs at distance, then a bi-pod for shooting prone could be among the right tactics.

Or... you are going after bunnies on the move, with close-in moving targets part of the mix, then a reflex or holo sight might be part of the right tactics.

Too many folks get hung up thinking tactics only apply to military operations, when there are many, many, many more applications for good tactics and a need for equipment that enhances them!

Yeah... the archangel has a ridiculous plastic bayonet. You could probably stab something with it and kill it, it is pointy enough, but it's more for looks anything else and in my opinion it doesn't look good. I left it off mine, it won't fit a .920 barrel anyway.

This was posted in another thread, but this is the "Tacticool" Rifle I built for my daughter.

It's a Tactical Solutions upper on a Spikes Tactical Lower. Bronx Rose Duracoat applied in my driveway.

Buy a standard AR-15 and a .22 drop-in bolt conversion.

Multiple concessions there, none of which bear fruit. Floating chambers and oversized bores, with projectiles that do not obturate...is a great way to be disgruntled.

If only for starters................

A Tactical .22 for me would be a bolt-action with a scope and sound suppressor;)

+1 for the M&P. Allows me to economically practice point shooting and other ar drills and thus far is void of any reliability issues.

being that the reciever part of the sr22 is nordic can you put the ar15 parts on it? such as forends and stocks? and can your replace parts on it like you can with a 10/22? such as the barrel?

Yes to both questions... the Nordic-made chassis will accept any AR parts, stocks, grips, fore-ends, and the guts are pure 10/22 and will accept most any "upgrade" available.

Whatever. I have more heavy precision target 22lrs than I know what to do with, including Win. 52D, BSA Martini MkII, Remington 541THB worked over by Brian Voelker, $3k 10/22 silhouette gun and more. None of them are worth a hook in a run and gun action rimfire rifle match with timed stages shooting moving targets, steel, etc. My GSG-5 excels at this though. Different tools for different jobs, which is why one must have a toolbox (aka gun safe). I enjoy them all. You might try to do the same. Adds to the overall thrill of shooting. ;)

I recently purchased a SR-22. This is my first 10/22. Started with a 3-10X44 scope. Dialed the scope in then shot a brick through it. Well I could not leave well enough alone. Got 2 BC steel lips 25 rd mags. Put in a Volquartsen hammer then a MoBuff buffer from KMO (thanks Kelly:D). Installed an auto bolt release with the new hammer. Magpul MBUS. With a Primary Arms M3 clone on a canted mount. Also removed the F/H (tight little bugger) then screwed on a Spikes Tactcial 6" fake can. Dialed the new setup at the local indoor couple days ago. Too cold outside:mad: This is just a fun little carbine that will eat any ammo that is available. I am enjoying working on this then sending cheap ammo down the pipe. PS Most of my mods were copied off other members in many forums. You guys know who you are ;);) Joe

I am going with the 15-22 since I recently bought one. Mine needed a slight fix to make it reliable but now it is just as reliable as my 10-22. And I have had the most fun with it.
