I also just bought a well used 30AS. From what ive been able to dig up about it, its basically a cheaper version of the 336. Its steel construction is supposed to be less refined (rougher surface texture) than the 336. I read somewhere that it was built by someone else and endorsed by marlin to sell to a more cost aware client. Other that that, I believe the dimensions of the rifle are supposed to be the same as the 336, and all parts interchangeable.
Mine has almost all of the blueing worn off, and i plan to re blue it within a couple weeks. a few rust pits are on the barrel, magazine tube, lever and receiver, but not serious enough to not be fixable.

They are a 336. The steel is not rougher. The only difference is that the stock is birch. Marlin made them as a less expensive alternative to the walnut-stocked 336.
