S&W Highway Patrolman

Hi all. My boss asked me to see if I could dig up some info on a gun that belonged to his dad. So here I am :D It is a S&W, on the barrel it is marked with .357 )-( HIGHWAY PATROLMAN
CTG.
Serial # begins with S129XXX. If anyone knows about this gun I would appreciate any help. It does not have any model # on it which I thought was strange. Thanks

The Highway Patrolman is the plain finish S&W .357 Magnum on the "N" frame. Without the high polish and checkered topstrap and rib of the original .357 Magnum, it was meant to sell at a reasonable price to law enforcement.

Model numbers were not assigned until 1957 at which time the Highway Patrolman became the Model 28 and the .357 Magnum became the Model 27. So Boss' gun is more than 52 years old to not be numbered.

Maybe somebody with the book will come along and look up the year for you.

It's called the Mod 28. It was a reduced cost version of the mod 27, lacking the 27's deluxe finish. It's intention was a police revolver that the cops could afford to buy. I believe it is somewhat rarer than the mod 27.

Ok, so I have one also. 6in Highway Patrolman. Ser# 29&^%. Also marked A-2 in the crook of the cylinder hinge along w/ the ser# etc. Also has Mod 28-2. I purchased this new in about 79.. Can I assume that this would be second version of the Mod #28? What is the second number in the same area, it is N&^%$#..?

The S prefix began in 1954 / the Highway Patrolman "pre model 28" was introduced April 15, 1954 - and my book says there were 8,427 of them produced in 1954.

In my area, they aren't especially rare - and depending on condition / in excellent condition they're worth around $ 600 or maybe $ 100 more than a no dash model 28 which is the newer version.

The pre model 27's ( fancier blued or Nickel finish ) are worth more money than the pre-model 28's - maybe as much as $ 250 more in excellent shape.

They're great guns / and that goes for all of the N frame S&W revolvers ..in my opinion. I have more than a few models ( different barrel lengths, different finishes of mod 27's and 28's and 29's ....) but the .357 mag is one of my all time favorite calibers in a S&W revolver.

I carried a Model 27 as my first revolver when I started in law enforcement in 1980. A "N" framed .357, it was heavier than the "K" framed model 19's that were popular at the time. It was accurate and had a very nice trigger pull. I traded it for a Model 19 due to the "K" frame being lighter.
